Chapter 9

The Enemy Inside the Family

The message remained on Charlotte's phone.

You finally discovered you were not a Vale.

Now discover who you really are.

For several minutes, Charlotte simply stared at the screen.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was exhausted.

For months, she had chased one truth after another.

First, she believed someone stole her company.

Then she discovered her brother existed.

Then she learned her mother had hidden secrets.

Then she found out the identity she had carried her entire life was not the one she was born with.

And now...

Another secret.

Another person controlling the truth.

Charlotte placed the phone on the table.

"Enough."

Thomas looked at her.

"Charlotte."

"No."

She shook her head.

"Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle."

Her voice became stronger.

"My father."

"My mother."

"Martin."

"Adrian."

"Even Victoria."

"They all protected me by lying to me."

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could deny it.

Charlotte looked at the people around her.

People connected to her family.

People who claimed to love her.

Then she asked the question that had been haunting her.

"Who knew?"

Silence.

"Who knew I was adopted?"

Martin lowered his eyes.

"I did."

"Who else?"

Thomas hesitated.

Charlotte looked at him.

"You."

He nodded slowly.

"Yes."

She closed her eyes.

"And Adrian?"

A long pause.

"Yes."

Her heart sank.

The only people who had helped her uncover the truth...

Were also people who had hidden it.

Then she looked at Victoria.

"And you?"

Victoria did not answer.

That was enough.

Charlotte stepped back.

"Everyone."

The word came out quietly.

"Everyone knew who I was except me."

Later that evening, Charlotte returned to the Vale mansion.

The place where she grew up.

The place she had avoided since her mother's death.

She walked through the empty halls.

Every painting.

Every piece of furniture.

Every memory.

Everything felt different.

Not because it changed.

Because she changed.

She stopped in front of the family portrait.

Alexander.

Evelyn.

Charlotte.

A perfect family.

But now she knew.

Perfect families did not exist.

Only families that hid their cracks well.

A sound came from behind her.

"You always hated this painting."

Charlotte turned.

Adrian stood there.

She was not surprised.

Somehow, she expected him.

"Why are you here?"

He looked at the portrait.

"Because I wanted to see if you finally understood."

"Understood what?"

"That our family was built on secrets."

Charlotte's expression hardened.

"Our family?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Whether you accept it or not, you are part of it."

"I am not a Vale."

Adrian stepped closer.

"You were more of a Vale than anyone."

Charlotte looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

"Because you were chosen."

She said nothing.

Adrian continued.

"Do you know why my father accepted you?"

"Because my mother loved me."

"Yes."

Adrian nodded.

"But there was more."

He looked toward the portrait.

"Alexander spent years searching for an heir."

Charlotte frowned.

"He had you."

Adrian smiled sadly.

"No."

"He had a son."

The difference was clear.

"He wanted a successor."

A pause.

"But he wanted a person who understood responsibility."

Charlotte remembered the inheritance agreement.

Not blood.

Purpose.

Adrian continued.

"When he met you, you were a child with nothing."

"Yet you shared your food with another child at the shelter."

Charlotte froze.

She remembered.

A little girl.

A hungry boy.

A small act nobody should have remembered.

"He saw that."

Adrian said.

"He told me something after that day."

Charlotte looked at him.

"What?"

"He said, 'That child understands wealth better than most people who own it.'"

For the first time, Adrian looked genuinely emotional.

"He chose you because of who you were."

Not because of blood.

Charlotte looked away.

"Then why did you hate me?"

The question hung between them.

Adrian was silent for a long time.

"Because I was jealous."

The honesty surprised her.

"I spent my whole life believing I was robbed."

"I thought my father replaced me."

"But the truth..."

He looked at her.

"The truth was that he didn't replace me."

"He found something I never had."

"What?"

"A reason to be worthy."

Charlotte studied him.

For the first time, she saw Adrian differently.

Not as a monster.

Not as an enemy.

A wounded person who chose the wrong way to handle his pain.

Then Adrian's expression changed.

"But there is something you still don't know."

Charlotte sighed.

"Another secret?"

"Yes."

She almost laughed.

"What now?"

Adrian handed her an envelope.

"This came from your mother's private collection."

Charlotte opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was Evelyn's.

Real.

She immediately knew.

Charlotte,

If you are reading this, Adrian has finally told you the truth.

She looked at Adrian.

He looked surprised.

The letter continued.

I need you to understand something.

Adrian was never the greatest danger to you.

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

Again.

The same warning.

The enemy was someone else.

The person who destroyed our family was someone who stood closest to us.

Charlotte continued reading.

Someone who knew Alexander's plans.

Someone who knew my fears.

Someone who knew every secret in this house.

Her fingers tightened around the paper.

Then came the final sentence.

The person who betrayed us was family.

The letter ended.

Charlotte looked up.

"She said family."

Adrian nodded.

"I know."

"She didn't mean Richard."

"No."

"Because Richard was never family."

Exactly.

The enemy was someone else.

Someone with the Vale name.

Someone connected by blood or loyalty.

Suddenly, Charlotte's phone rang.

The number was familiar.

Unknown.

She answered.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice replied.

"Charlotte."

Her entire body froze.

Because she knew that voice.

She had heard it many times.

At family dinners.

At charity events.

At the mansion.

A voice that always sounded kind.

A voice that always offered help.

A voice nobody would suspect.

"Who is this?"

Charlotte whispered.

The woman answered:

"You know exactly who I am."

Charlotte's face turned pale.

Because the person calling...

Was someone everyone believed had disappeared forever.

"Your mother was right."

The woman said.

"She should never have trusted me."

Charlotte's hand trembled.

"Where are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"Come to the old Vale cemetery."

"Alone."

The call ended.

Adrian immediately noticed her expression.

"What happened?"

Charlotte looked at him.

"The enemy inside the family..."

She swallowed.

"Is alive."

Thirty minutes later, Charlotte stood outside the old Vale cemetery.

Rain fell heavily.

She waited.

Then a figure appeared between the graves.

A woman.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

Charlotte could barely speak.

"Impossible..."

The woman looked at her with tears in her eyes.

"I'm sorry, Charlotte."

A pause.

"I was supposed to protect you."

Charlotte stepped back.

Because the woman standing before her...

Was the person everyone believed had died years ago.

Her aunt.

Alexander Vale's sister.

The last person anyone expected.

The woman who knew every secret of the Vale family.

May you like

And the woman who had been hiding in the shadows all along.

To be continued...
