Chapter 2

Chapter 2
The Heiress Nobody Remembered
The silence inside the Solmere Hotel lasted only a few seconds.
But to Charlotte Vale, those seconds felt like years.
Because in that moment, she saw everything clearly.
The shocked faces.
The whispers.
The fear.
Not because people finally recognized her.
Because they realized they had been wrong.
The same guests who had watched her being dragged across the marble floor now avoided looking directly at her.
The same employees who had looked away now stood frozen.
The same security guards who had treated her like a stranger now stepped backward.
Power had a strange effect on people.
It did not change who they were.
It revealed who they had always been.
Victoria Ashford stared at the ownership document in Richard's hands.
Her face had lost its perfect expression.
For the first time, Charlotte saw something underneath the expensive makeup and carefully practiced confidence.
Fear.
Real fear.
"This is a forgery."
Victoria's voice was sharp.
Everyone looked at her.
She immediately recovered.
"Someone created a fake document to embarrass us."
Charlotte almost smiled.
Almost.
Because Victoria was predictable.
People who built their lives on lies always believed the truth was another lie waiting to be exposed.
Richard said nothing.
That worried Charlotte more than Victoria's anger.
Because Richard Ashford was not a man who panicked easily.
He was the kind of person who always had a second plan.
A third plan.
A way out.
"Richard."
Victoria turned toward him.
"Say something."
He looked at Charlotte.
Not with anger.
Not with surprise.
With calculation.
"Charlotte Vale."
The way he said her name made the entire room uncomfortable.
Because he did not say it like a stranger.
He said it like someone who had spent years trying to forget it.
"So you finally came back."
The words confirmed everything.
He knew.
Charlotte stepped forward.
"Yes."
"After everyone told the world I disappeared."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"You should not have returned."
A cold feeling moved through the room.
Not:
"You are mistaken."
Not:
"This is impossible."
Not:
"Let's discuss this."
You should not have returned.
Charlotte looked at him carefully.
"Why?"
Richard did not answer.
Victoria did.
"Because you are too late."
Charlotte turned.
"What?"
Victoria walked closer.
Her confidence was slowly returning.
"You think showing one document gives you control?"
She laughed softly.
"You have no idea what happened after your mother's death."
Charlotte's expression hardened.
"Then explain."
Victoria looked around the lobby.
"Your mother lost control before she died."
"Your company was already collapsing."
"The board needed someone capable."
Charlotte stared at her.
"My mother built this company."
Victoria smiled.
"And then she left it."
That sentence hit something inside Charlotte.
Because that was exactly the story everyone had accepted.
Her mother abandoned the empire.
Her daughter disappeared.
The Vale family ended.
But Charlotte knew better.
Her mother would never leave.
Not willingly.
"Where is my mother's private office?"
Charlotte asked.
Richard answered immediately.
"Closed."
"Why?"
"Because there was nothing left there."
A lie.
A bad one.
Charlotte knew because her mother had spent every night there during the final months of her life.
Searching.
Investigating.
Fighting.
"My mother's belongings."
Charlotte said.
"I want access."
Richard shook his head.
"You have no authority here."
Charlotte slowly raised the ownership document.
"I believe this says otherwise."
For the first time, Richard's confidence disappeared.
Only briefly.
But Charlotte noticed.
He turned toward the employees.
"Everyone leave."
The lobby began moving.
Guests whispered.
Phones came out.
News would spread quickly.
Victoria stepped closer.
"You think you won because people saw your name on a paper?"
She lowered her voice.
"You don't understand what happened to your family."
Charlotte looked at her.
"Then tell me."
Victoria smiled.
A cruel, confident smile.
"Your mother wasn't betrayed."
A pause.
"She was betrayed by someone she loved."
Charlotte froze.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria walked away.
"Ask yourself why your mother trusted so many people..."
"And why every single one of them eventually turned against her."
The words stayed with Charlotte.
Because they created the question she had avoided.
Who was the real traitor?
Not Richard.
Not Victoria.
Not the board.
Someone closer.
Someone her mother trusted.
That night, Charlotte returned to the small apartment she had rented under another name.
No servants.
No luxury.
No security.
Just silence.
Six months earlier, she had lived in a mansion overlooking the ocean.
She had attended charity events.
She had been photographed beside world leaders.
She had been introduced as the future of the Vale Empire.
Then one phone call changed everything.
"Charlotte..."
Her mother's voice had been weak.
Tired.
But afraid.
"Listen to me carefully."
"Do not come home."
Charlotte remembered crying.
"What are you talking about?"
"Someone inside Solmere knows the truth."
"What truth?"
A long silence.
Then:
"That you are not just my daughter."
Charlotte had never forgotten those words.
At the time, she thought her mother meant emotionally.
That she meant Charlotte was more important than an heir.
More than a name.
But now...
She wondered if there was another meaning.
A knock interrupted her thoughts.
Charlotte immediately stood.
Nobody knew this address.
Nobody except...
She opened the door carefully.
A man stood outside.
Older.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
"Charlotte."
Her heart stopped.
Because she recognized him.
Thomas Reed.
Her father's former lawyer.
The man who had disappeared after her mother's death.
"What are you doing here?"
Thomas looked around nervously.
"I should have come sooner."
Charlotte stepped aside.
"Come in."
He entered and placed a small envelope on the table.
"I found this hidden in your father's old files."
Charlotte opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A family photograph.
Her father.
Her mother.
Herself.
And someone else.
A young man.
Standing beside her father.
Charlotte frowned.
"Who is he?"
Thomas looked at her.
"Someone you were never supposed to know existed."
The room became cold.
"His name is Adrian Vale."
Charlotte stared at the photograph.
"Adrian?"
Thomas nodded.
"Your father's first son."
The words felt impossible.
"My father had another child?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't I know?"
Thomas looked away.
"Because your mother and father spent twenty years trying to protect you from him."
Charlotte felt her heartbeat increase.
"Protect me from my own brother?"
Thomas did not answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Charlotte..."
"Your brother is the reason your mother died."
The world seemed to stop.
"That's impossible."
Thomas opened the envelope again.
Inside was another document.
A handwritten note.
Charlotte read it.
Her mother's handwriting.
The final words:
If Charlotte finds this, it means I failed to protect her.
Adrian is back.
Do not trust anyone carrying the Vale name.
Charlotte's hands trembled.
For six months, she believed she was fighting strangers who stole her company.
Now she understood.
The enemy had never been outside the family.
Someone with the same blood.
Someone with the same name.
Someone who had been erased from history.
And somewhere in the shadows of the Solmere Empire...
Adrian Vale was watching.
Waiting.
Because Charlotte's return was not a surprise.
May you like
It was exactly what he wanted.
To be continued...
