Chapter 4

The Forgotten Signature

The room remained frozen.

The lights had returned.

The emergency system had restored power.

But nothing felt normal anymore.

Not after those words.

Welcome home, little sister.

Charlotte stared at the man standing across from her.

The man she had spent weeks searching for.

The man her mother had warned her about.

The man whose existence had been hidden from her entire life.

Adrian Vale.

He looked nothing like the monster Charlotte had imagined.

That was what disturbed her most.

He was calm.

Controlled.

Almost gentle.

The kind of person who never needed to raise his voice because he believed the world would eventually listen.

Victoria stood beside him.

But she was no longer the powerful woman in white silk.

She looked like someone caught between two sides of a war.

Charlotte looked at both of them.

"So this is the truth?"

Neither answered.

"You both knew."

Her voice became colder.

"You both knew who I was."

Adrian smiled slightly.

"Of course."

The answer shocked her.

Not because he admitted it.

Because he admitted it so easily.

"Then why?"

Charlotte stepped closer.

"Why let me believe I lost everything?"

Adrian looked around Evelyn's office.

"This room belonged to my father."

"No."

Charlotte's voice sharpened.

"This room belonged to my mother."

A small smile appeared on Adrian's face.

"There is the difference between us."

"What difference?"

"You think things belong to people because they love them."

He looked at the desk.

"I believe things belong to people because they are strong enough to take them."

Charlotte felt disgust rise inside her.

"That's why my mother feared you."

For the first time, Adrian's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"Your mother was afraid because she knew the truth."

"What truth?"

He walked toward the desk.

Then he placed an old folder on it.

A folder Charlotte had never seen before.

"Your mother spent the last months of her life searching for this."

Charlotte did not touch it.

"What is it?"

"The reason Solmere was never truly yours."

The words hit like a blow.

Victoria looked away.

Charlotte noticed.

"You knew."

Victoria said nothing.

"Victoria."

The woman in white silk finally spoke.

"Yes."

Charlotte laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

"Everyone knew something except me."

Nobody responded.

Because it was true.

Adrian opened the folder.

Inside were legal documents.

Old contracts.

Property agreements.

And one signature.

Charlotte immediately recognized the handwriting.

Her father's.

Alexander Vale.

"What is that?"

Adrian looked at her.

"The forgotten signature."

Twenty years earlier, before Charlotte was born, Alexander Vale created a private inheritance agreement.

Not the public will.

Not the document shown to the board.

A secret agreement.

The document stated that the Vale Empire would not automatically pass to Charlotte.

Instead, control would belong to the person who could prove they represented Alexander's true vision.

Charlotte frowned.

"That doesn't make sense."

Adrian smiled.

"It makes perfect sense."

"Because your father believed blood was not enough."

Charlotte looked at him.

"So you think you deserve the company because you are his first son."

"No."

Adrian shook his head.

"I deserve it because I understand what he built."

"You destroyed what he built."

The room became silent.

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"Your mother told you that."

"Because it was true."

"No."

His voice became colder.

"Because she wanted you to believe I was the villain."

Charlotte looked at Victoria.

"Is he lying?"

Victoria hesitated.

That hesitation hurt more than any answer.

"What happened?"

Charlotte demanded.

Victoria slowly walked toward the desk.

"Alexander Vale was not perfect."

Charlotte stared.

"No one said he was."

"But your mother wanted the world to believe he was."

Victoria touched the documents.

"After Adrian disappeared, Alexander changed."

"Changed how?"

"He became afraid."

Charlotte frowned.

"Your father started hiding information."

"Moving assets."

"Creating backup plans."

"Because of Adrian?"

Victoria nodded.

"But then something happened."

"What?"

"Alexander discovered someone else was trying to steal Solmere."

Charlotte looked confused.

"Who?"

Victoria looked directly at her.

"You."

The words were impossible.

Charlotte stepped back.

"What?"

"Not you personally."

Victoria quickly explained.

"The idea of you."

She pointed toward the documents.

"Your father created a condition."

"What condition?"

"That Charlotte Vale would only inherit Solmere if she proved she could survive without it."

Charlotte stared.

A strange feeling moved through her.

Her father had not abandoned her.

He had tested her.

But why?

Adrian answered.

"Because he knew someone would come for you."

"Who?"

He looked at himself in the reflection of the window.

"Me."

The honesty was unsettling.

Charlotte picked up one of the documents.

She studied the signature.

Then stopped.

Something was wrong.

The signature.

Her father's name was there.

But the date was impossible.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at her.

"This document was signed after my father died."

Silence.

Adrian's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Charlotte saw it.

Fear.

"That is impossible."

Victoria whispered.

Charlotte turned the paper.

"The date says three months after his official death."

Thomas Reed's words suddenly returned.

Someone had created fake documents.

Someone had manipulated records.

Charlotte looked at Adrian.

"You didn't create this."

He said nothing.

"You found it."

The silence answered.

For the first time, Adrian looked uncertain.

Charlotte continued.

"Someone else signed this."

Victoria stepped closer.

"Who?"

Charlotte looked at the signature again.

Not Alexander Vale.

Not Adrian.

Not Richard.

A different signature.

One she had seen before.

On documents from the Solmere board.

Her stomach tightened.

"Richard Ashford."

The name changed everything.

Adrian looked shocked.

"Richard?"

Victoria whispered:

"No."

Charlotte understood.

The conspiracy was bigger than she thought.

Richard had not simply helped Victoria.

He had not simply managed Solmere after her mother's death.

He had been rewriting the family's history.

The man everyone believed was only a businessman...

Was the person controlling the entire game.

Suddenly, Adrian's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"What happened?"

Charlotte asked.

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

"Richard knows we found the document."

Victoria looked frightened.

"How?"

Adrian answered:

"Because he sent me a message."

Charlotte stared.

"What did it say?"

Adrian turned the phone around.

Only one sentence appeared.

You both forgot one thing.

I was the one who made your father sign.

Nobody spoke.

Because the truth was finally becoming clear.

Adrian was not the only hidden enemy.

Victoria was not the mastermind.

Someone else had been standing beside the Vale family all along.

Someone trusted.

Someone welcomed.

Someone who knew every weakness.

Richard Ashford.

The man who stole Solmere.

The man who erased Charlotte's name.

The man who had convinced the world she never existed.

Charlotte looked toward the locked office door.

For years, everyone thought the greatest threat to Solmere was the missing heir.

They were wrong.

The real danger had never disappeared.

May you like

It had been sitting in the CEO's chair.

To be continued...
