Chapter 3

Chapter 3
The Woman in White Silk
The first thing Charlotte noticed about Victoria Ashford was not her beauty.
Everyone noticed that.
It was impossible not to.
Victoria had built an entire identity around perfection.
Every movement was carefully measured.
Every smile had a purpose.
Every word was chosen like a weapon.
But Charlotte noticed something else.
Victoria was afraid.
Not the fear of being exposed.
Not the fear of losing money.
A deeper fear.
The fear of someone discovering what she had spent years hiding.
The next morning, every major news outlet reported the same story.
MYSTERIOUS WOMAN CLAIMS TO BE THE TRUE HEIR OF SOLMERE EMPIRE
The headlines did not call Charlotte an heiress.
They called her a stranger.
A woman making impossible claims.
A person trying to steal a company she supposedly abandoned.
Charlotte read the articles quietly.
She was not surprised.
Richard Ashford had always understood one thing:
The first person to control the story controlled the public.
Her phone rang.
Thomas Reed.
"Charlotte."
"Yes?"
"You need to see something."
She met him at a small private office outside the city.
Thomas looked exhausted.
Like a man who had carried a secret for too many years.
"I should have told you everything when your mother died."
Charlotte looked at him.
"But you didn't."
"No."
"Why?"
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"Because I was afraid."
That answer surprised her.
Not because it was unbelievable.
Because honest fear was rare.
"What were you afraid of?"
Thomas opened an old file.
"Adrian."
The name had already become a shadow in Charlotte's mind.
"Tell me about him."
Thomas sighed.
"Adrian Vale was your father's first child."
"Born before your father married Evelyn."
Charlotte looked at the photograph again.
"So why erase him?"
Thomas hesitated.
"Because Adrian was brilliant."
"Too brilliant?"
"No."
Thomas looked at her.
"Because he believed he deserved everything."
Adrian grew up knowing he was a Vale.
Knowing his bloodline.
Knowing the wealth attached to his name.
But he also grew up knowing something else.
He was not the chosen heir.
When Alexander Vale married Evelyn and later had Charlotte, the future became clear.
Charlotte would inherit.
Not because she was older.
Not because she was more talented.
Because Alexander believed his daughter understood the responsibility behind the empire.
Adrian saw it differently.
To him, it was betrayal.
A father choosing another child.
A family stealing what belonged to him.
"He hated your mother," Thomas said.
"Why?"
"Because Evelyn was the one who convinced Alexander that inheritance should be based on character, not blood."
Charlotte looked down.
"So Adrian believed my mother stole his future."
Thomas nodded.
"And he spent years proving she was wrong."
A cold feeling moved through Charlotte.
"What does Victoria have to do with him?"
Thomas became silent.
That silence was the answer.
"Thomas."
He finally spoke.
"Victoria Ashford did not enter Richard's life by accident."
Charlotte leaned forward.
"What do you mean?"
"Victoria knew about Adrian long before she met Richard."
The room became quiet.
Charlotte remembered the woman in white silk.
The woman who dragged her across the hotel floor.
The woman who acted like Solmere belonged to her.
"How?"
Thomas opened another file.
Inside were photographs.
Old photographs.
One showed Victoria.
Much younger.
Standing beside a man.
Charlotte recognized him immediately.
Adrian Vale.
Her hands tightened around the paper.
"They knew each other."
"Yes."
"How long?"
Thomas looked away.
"Twenty years."
The truth hit harder than Charlotte expected.
Victoria was not simply Richard's wife.
Not just a socialite.
Not just someone who benefited from Solmere.
She was part of the plan.
But why?
That night, Charlotte returned to the Solmere Hotel.
Not secretly.
Not disguised.
This time, she entered through the front entrance.
The same entrance where Victoria had dragged her.
The same marble floor where everyone had watched her humiliation.
The employees froze when they saw her.
Some lowered their heads.
Some looked embarrassed.
Charlotte did not blame them.
Fear made people silent.
She knew that better than anyone.
The elevator took her to the executive floor.
Her father's floor.
Her mother's floor.
The floor that had been closed since her disappearance.
A security guard stopped her.
"Miss, this area is restricted."
Charlotte looked at him.
"Open the door."
"I'm sorry."
She removed a key from her pocket.
An old key.
The one her mother had given her before she died.
"This was my mother's."
The guard looked confused.
Charlotte placed it against the scanner.
The light turned green.
Everyone stopped.
Because the system recognized her.
Not as a visitor.
Not as a stranger.
As the owner.
The doors opened.
Inside was her mother's private office.
Untouched.
Exactly as it had been.
The room smelled faintly of old paper and perfume.
Charlotte walked slowly.
Every object carried a memory.
Her mother's books.
Her father's desk.
Family photographs.
Then she noticed something.
A painting on the wall.
A portrait of the Vale family.
Her eyes moved across it.
Her father.
Her mother.
Herself.
Then she saw something strange.
A small empty space.
Between her father and herself.
A place where another portrait had once been.
Someone had removed Adrian.
Not hidden.
Erased.
Charlotte touched the empty space.
"Why were you afraid of him?"
A voice answered behind her.
"Because my father created a monster."
Charlotte turned.
Victoria Ashford stood at the doorway.
Wearing white silk.
As always.
The woman from the lobby.
The woman who had humiliated her.
The woman who knew more than she admitted.
"You came alone."
Charlotte said.
Victoria smiled.
"You always were brave."
"Or foolish?"
Victoria walked into the office.
"Your mother used to say the same thing."
Charlotte froze.
"You knew my mother?"
Victoria looked around the room.
"I knew Evelyn very well."
"How?"
Victoria touched the old desk.
"Because before I became Mrs. Ashford..."
"I was someone your mother trusted."
Charlotte stared.
That was impossible.
"My mother trusted you?"
Victoria nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why did you help destroy her?"
For the first time...
Victoria's expression broke.
Pain.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Pain.
"Because I had no choice."
Charlotte laughed bitterly.
"Everyone says that."
Victoria stepped closer.
"Your mother was going to expose Adrian."
"I tried to stop her."
"Why?"
Victoria looked directly into Charlotte's eyes.
"Because Adrian was not the only person hiding a secret."
The room became silent.
"What secret?"
Victoria looked toward the old family portrait.
"Your father did not tell you the truth about your birth."
Charlotte felt the air disappear.
"What are you talking about?"
Victoria whispered:
"Charlotte Vale..."
"You are not the only child Alexander Vale kept hidden."
Before Charlotte could answer, the lights suddenly went out.
The entire executive floor became dark.
Then Charlotte heard footsteps.
Someone else was inside.
A man's voice came from the darkness.
Calm.
Cold.
Familiar.
"Victoria."
A pause.
"You have said enough."
Charlotte froze.
Because she knew that voice.
Adrian Vale.
The man her mother warned her about.
The brother who disappeared.
The man who wanted Solmere.
He stepped into the faint emergency light.
And smiled.
"Welcome home, little sister."
Charlotte stared at him.
After all these years...
The missing heir had finally returned.
But his first words were not a threat.
Not an accusation.
They were something much worse.
A warning.
May you like
"You have no idea who you really are."
To be continued...
