Chapter 1: The Fall Before the Vows

Chapter 1: The Fall Before the Vows
The first thing I heard was the sound of glass breaking.
Not the soft, delicate crack of a champagne flute slipping from nervous fingers.
No.
It was violent.
Sharp.
A sound that announced something beautiful had just been destroyed.
For a moment, I thought it was a dream.
A nightmare created by the stress of the biggest day of my life.
The wedding dress hanging beside me was still untouched. The flowers decorating the bridal suite still smelled like fresh roses. The sunlight pouring through the tall windows still painted golden patterns across the marble floor.
Everything looked perfect.
Everything looked like the beginning of forever.
But forever ended in less than ten seconds.
Because the person standing in front of me was not supposed to be my enemy.
She was supposed to be the person holding my hand when I walked toward the altar.
My maid of honor.
My best friend.
Victoria Hale.
For twelve years, she had been the one person I trusted without hesitation.
She knew every secret I had ever carried.
Every heartbreak.
Every fear.
Every dream.
She had cried with me when I lost my mother.
She had stayed awake with me during the nights when I wondered if I would ever find love again.
And today, she was supposed to stand beside me as I married the man who had changed my life.
But the woman in front of me was a stranger.
Her perfectly curled hair had started falling apart. Her makeup was streaked from tears I hadn't seen her cry. Her hands were shaking.
Not from sadness.
From rage.
"Victoria..."
My voice came out barely above a whisper.
"What are you doing?"
She didn't answer.
She just stared at me.
Her eyes were terrifying.
There was no warmth left.
No friendship.
No memory of everything we had shared.
Only hatred.
Pure, burning hatred.
"You really don't know, do you?"
Her voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
And somehow that frightened me more than screaming.
I slowly stepped backward, one hand instinctively moving toward my stomach.
Seven months pregnant.
My baby.
The tiny life growing inside me.
The child who was supposed to be born into a world filled with love.
"Know what?" I asked.
Victoria laughed.
A broken, bitter laugh.
"You still get to pretend."
I frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
She walked closer.
"You walk around wearing that innocent smile. You let everyone believe you're perfect."
My heart began pounding.
"Victoria, you're scaring me."
"Good."
The word froze my blood.
"Because you should be scared."
Before I could react, she grabbed my arm.
Hard.
A sharp pain shot through my shoulder.
"Let go of me!"
I tried pulling away, but she held tighter.
"You destroyed my family."
The accusation hit me harder than her grip.
"What?"
"You heard me."
Her fingers dug into my skin.
"My father lost everything because of you."
I stared at her in disbelief.
"I don't understand."
"Of course you don't."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You never understand the damage you leave behind."
"Victoria, I swear, I have no idea what you're talking about."
That was the truth.
And maybe that was what made her even angrier.
Because she believed I was lying.
"You ruined my father's company."
My breath caught.
"What company?"
She shoved my arm away.
The force nearly made me lose balance.
"My father's investment firm."
I shook my head.
"Victoria, I have never even met your father."
Her expression twisted.
"Stop lying!"
The scream echoed through the room.
I flinched.
A second later, she pushed me.
Hard.
Everything happened too quickly.
My body moved backward.
My heel caught the edge of the carpet.
And then—
The world disappeared.
I hit the floor.
The pain was immediate.
A violent explosion through my back and stomach.
A cry escaped my throat before I could stop it.
My hands flew over my belly.
"No..."
My voice broke.
"No, no, no..."
Fear replaced everything.
Not the wedding.
Not Victoria.
Not the betrayal.
Only my baby.
"Please..."
Tears blurred my vision.
"Please stop..."
Victoria stood above me.
Watching.
"You should have thought about that before destroying my family."
"I didn't do anything..."
My voice trembled.
"I swear..."
She looked down at me with a coldness I had never seen before.
Then she lifted her foot.
My blood turned cold.
"Victoria..."
I couldn't breathe.
"Please."
Her heel hovered above me.
"Do you know what it feels like to lose everything?"
Her voice cracked.
"Do you know what it feels like to watch your father sit in an empty house because someone took away his entire life?"
"I don't know what happened, but we can talk—"
"No."
Her face hardened.
"You don't get to talk your way out of this."
The door suddenly slammed open.
"STOP!"
The voice froze the entire room.
My eyes moved toward the entrance.
And there he was.
My fiancé.
Alexander Whitmore.
Standing in the doorway.
Still wearing his black tuxedo.
The man I loved.
The man I believed would always protect me.
Relief flooded my chest.
"Alex..."
I reached toward him.
My hand shook.
"Please..."
I expected him to run.
I expected him to push Victoria away.
I expected him to call for help.
But he didn't move.
Not even an inch.
His eyes moved from me...
To Victoria...
Then to the Bluetooth speaker sitting on the table.
A strange expression crossed his face.
Confusion.
Shock.
Then something darker.
I followed his gaze.
"What is it?"
He didn't answer.
The speaker suddenly played a voice recording.
A voice I recognized.
My own voice.
My blood turned cold.
"No..."
The recording continued.
Clear.
Unforgiving.
A conversation from months ago.
A conversation I thought no one had ever heard.
"I know exactly what I'm doing," my recorded voice said.
"I need his father's company to collapse before Alexander discovers the truth."
Alexander's face changed.
The color drained from it.
Victoria smiled.
A cruel, victorious smile.
"You wanted him to love you?"
She looked at me.
"Now let him hear who you really are."
I couldn't speak.
Because I remembered that conversation.
I remembered the night.
The desperation.
The anger.
The choices I had made.
But there was something Alexander didn't know.
Something Victoria didn't know.
Something hidden beneath the recording.
The truth behind why I had destroyed his father's empire.
Because I hadn't done it for money.
I hadn't done it for revenge.
I had done it because his father had destroyed my family first.
But the recording didn't explain that.
It only showed my darkest moment.
The moment where I looked like the villain.
Alexander finally looked at me.
The pain in his eyes was worse than hatred.
"Is it true?"
His voice was barely audible.
I opened my mouth.
No words came.
Because how could I explain years of secrets in a single sentence?
How could I tell the man I loved that the foundation of our relationship was built on a lie?
"Alex..."
He stepped backward.
And that hurt more than falling.
"You knew."
His voice cracked.
"You knew who I was."
Tears rolled down my face.
"I knew who your father was."
His jaw tightened.
"That's not an answer."
Victoria crossed her arms.
"Tell him the truth."
I looked at Alexander.
The man I was supposed to marry in less than an hour.
The father of my child.
The person I loved more than anything.
And for the first time, I realized something terrifying.
The attack on me was not the real betrayal.
The real betrayal was that someone had carefully planned this moment.
The recording.
The timing.
The room.
Everything.
Someone wanted Alexander to see me as a monster.
Someone wanted our wedding day to become a battlefield.
And standing there with a broken heart and a body full of pain, I finally understood.
The woman who pushed me was only the beginning.
The real enemy was still hidden.
I placed a trembling hand over my stomach.
And whispered the only thing I could say.
"Alex... before you hate me, you need to know the truth."
But he looked at me like I was already a stranger.
And the doors of the bridal suite slowly closed behind him.
Leaving me on the floor.
Alone.
May you like
Broken.
And surrounded by the ashes of the life I thought I was about to begin.
