Chapter 7: The Truth About the Father’s Ruin

Chapter 7: The Truth About the Father’s Ruin

For fifteen years, I had carried the same question inside my heart.

What happened to my mother?

Every birthday.

Every holiday.

Every important moment of my life.

There was always an empty space.

A missing voice.

A person who should have been there.

I had spent years trying to accept that she was gone.

That life was unfair.

That sometimes people disappeared and there was nothing anyone could do.

But now, standing in that library, surrounded by people who had known more than they ever told me, I realized something much worse.

My mother hadn't disappeared from my life.

She had been taken from it.

And Victoria knew.

"I was there."

Her words echoed through the room.

I stared at her.

"You were there?"

Victoria looked down.

The confidence she had carried earlier was gone.

The woman who had attacked me.

The woman who had tried to destroy my wedding.

Now looked like someone finally facing the consequences of a secret she had buried for too long.

"Where?"

My voice shook.

"The night my mother disappeared."

Victoria closed her eyes.

"I was seventeen."

Nobody spoke.

"I didn't understand everything."

She swallowed.

"But I knew something was wrong."

Alexander stepped forward.

"What happened?"

Victoria looked at him.

Then at me.

"It started with my father."

My heart tightened.

Her father.

The man whose company collapsed.

The man who became the center of all this.

"My father worked for Richard Whitmore for twenty years."

She looked toward Richard.

"He believed in him."

Richard's face remained expressionless.

"Until he found out what Richard was doing."

Alexander looked at his father.

"Financial fraud."

Victoria nodded.

"Hidden accounts. Fake companies. Money moved through people who didn't even know they were being used."

She looked at me.

"Your mother discovered the same thing."

I whispered:

"That's why they knew each other."

"Yes."

Victoria continued.

"They were working together."

The room felt smaller.

My mother.

Richard.

Victoria's father.

All connected.

All part of a story I had never known.

"My mother trusted your father."

I looked at Richard.

"Why?"

Victoria laughed sadly.

"Because everyone trusted him."

The bitterness in her voice was clear.

"He was charming. Intelligent. Generous."

She looked at Alexander.

"Even you believed he was a good man."

Alexander looked away.

Victoria continued.

"When your mother and my father discovered the truth, they decided to expose him."

Richard finally spoke.

"That is not what happened."

Everyone turned.

His voice was calm.

But his eyes were not.

"Your father betrayed me."

Victoria looked at him with hatred.

"He tried to stop you."

"No."

Richard shook his head.

"He tried to save himself."

"You ruined him."

Richard's expression hardened.

"Your father made his own choices."

Victoria laughed.

"That's what you always say."

She looked at Alexander.

"That's how he sleeps at night."

Alexander looked at his father.

"Did you destroy her father?"

Richard didn't answer.

And once again...

The silence was enough.

I looked at the documents in Alexander's hand.

"So where do I fit into this?"

Victoria looked at me.

"You were the reason everything started again."

"What?"

"After your mother disappeared, the investigation stopped."

She took a shaky breath.

"Everyone was afraid."

My hands tightened.

"But years later, you found the files."

I nodded slowly.

"I found evidence."

Victoria smiled sadly.

"You found what your mother left behind."

A chill moved through me.

"What do you mean?"

"She knew she might not survive."

My heart stopped.

"Stop."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"Emily..."

"Stop."

I couldn't hear anymore.

I didn't want to hear.

Because somewhere inside me, I still wanted my mother to have simply left.

I wanted her disappearance to be an accident.

Not a sacrifice.

Victoria continued anyway.

"She left everything hidden."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Then how do you know?"

Victoria looked at Richard.

"Because he was searching for it."

Richard's face changed.

Alexander noticed.

"What is she talking about?"

Richard looked angry now.

"Enough."

"No."

Alexander stepped closer.

"You don't get to decide when enough is enough."

His voice was stronger than I had ever heard.

"You lied about my mother."

He looked at him.

"You lied about Emily."

His voice cracked.

"And now I find out you lied about everything."

Richard stared at his son.

"You think you understand the world."

"No."

Alexander shook his head.

"I think I finally don't."

Then something unexpected happened.

Richard sat down.

The powerful businessman.

The man who controlled millions.

The man who had terrified everyone around him.

Looked suddenly old.

Tired.

"I did not destroy your mother's life."

Everyone became silent.

"I destroyed a company."

He looked at me.

"But I did not kill anyone."

My heart stopped.

"I never said you killed her."

I whispered.

"But you believe it."

I didn't answer.

Because maybe I had.

Maybe deep inside, I had always blamed him.

Richard continued.

"Your mother was not only investigating me."

"What?"

"She was investigating someone else."

The room froze.

"Who?"

Richard looked at Victoria.

And Victoria's face immediately changed.

"No."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"Your father knew."

Victoria stepped backward.

"Don't."

"He knew the truth."

"Stop!"

Her voice broke.

Alexander looked between them.

"What truth?"

Richard spoke.

"The collapse of Whitmore Financial was not my crime alone."

Nobody moved.

"Someone inside my company helped create the disaster."

He looked at Victoria.

"Someone your father protected."

Victoria's face turned pale.

"No."

Richard continued.

"Your father discovered that another executive was stealing money."

My mind raced.

"Then why did he lose everything?"

Richard looked at me.

"Because he took the blame."

Silence.

Victoria shook her head.

"My father would never."

"He did."

Richard replied.

"He sacrificed himself because he was trying to protect you."

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"You're lying."

"No."

Richard looked at her.

"For once, I am telling the truth."

Alexander picked up another document.

His face changed as he read.

"What is this?"

The security officer stepped closer.

"Those are the original transaction records."

Alexander looked at me.

"Emily..."

"What?"

He handed me the paper.

My eyes scanned the page.

And then I saw it.

A signature.

A name.

A name that made my blood run cold.

Because it wasn't Richard Whitmore.

It wasn't Victoria's father.

It wasn't my mother.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been standing beside us this entire time.

Someone who had been pretending to help.

Someone who knew exactly how this story would unfold.

I looked at Alexander.

"Your father wasn't the only one hiding secrets."

He frowned.

"Who?"

My hand trembled as I pointed at the document.

"The person who caused the collapse..."

My voice broke.

"Was your uncle."

Alexander froze.

"My uncle?"

Richard stood immediately.

"No."

For the first time...

Real fear appeared in his eyes.

Because he knew what that meant.

If this was true...

Then the enemy wasn't outside the family.

It was inside.

And the person who destroyed the Whitmore empire...

was still free.

Watching.

May you like

Waiting.
