Chapter 5: The Empire That Collapsed

Chapter 5: The Empire That Collapsed

The phone call ended.

But my mother's words remained.

"Your fiancé is not who you think he is."

They repeated inside my mind like a warning I couldn't escape.

Alexander stood only a few feet away from me.

The man I had planned to marry.

The man whose child I carried.

The man whose smile had once made me believe I had finally found my home.

Now I wondered if I had ever truly known him.

The most terrifying thing about betrayal wasn't discovering someone had lied.

It was realizing you might have loved the lie.

"Emily."

Alexander's voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

His face was filled with confusion.

Pain.

Fear.

"Tell me what she meant."

I wanted to answer.

I wanted to say I didn't know.

I wanted to tell him that I was just as lost as he was.

But the truth was...

A small part of me was afraid.

Because my mother's warning had not sounded like the words of someone making an accusation.

It sounded like someone trying to save me.

"I don't know."

Alexander studied my face.

"Do you believe her?"

The question hurt.

Because it had another meaning.

Do you believe me?

After everything?

I looked away.

"I don't know what to believe anymore."

The sentence seemed to wound him.

But before he could respond, Richard spoke.

"Your mother has always been good at creating chaos."

My eyes turned toward him.

"You knew she was alive."

It wasn't a question.

His silence confirmed it.

Alexander looked at his father.

"What?"

Richard's expression remained controlled.

"She contacted me years ago."

My breath caught.

"You knew?"

"Yes."

"And you let me believe she was dead?"

Richard looked at me.

"Emily—"

"No."

My voice shook.

"You don't get to say my name like you care."

The pain I had buried for fifteen years exploded.

"Do you have any idea what it feels like to lose your mother?"

Richard said nothing.

"I was eighteen years old."

My tears fell.

"I had no family left. No answers. No goodbye."

My voice broke.

"And all this time, you knew."

Alexander looked at his father with disbelief.

"How could you do that?"

Richard's jaw tightened.

"I was protecting you."

"Protecting me from what?"

Alexander demanded.

"The truth."

Richard replied.

That answer made something inside Alexander break.

Because he finally understood.

His entire life had been built on information chosen by someone else.

His father had decided what he was allowed to know.

And now Alexander was realizing that the person he trusted most had been controlling his reality.

Three hours later, the wedding venue was empty.

The guests had been sent home.

The decorations remained.

Thousands of flowers stood untouched.

A celebration abandoned before it began.

The world outside continued normally.

People drove down the streets.

Children laughed in parks.

Restaurants served dinner.

But inside Whitmore Manor...

Everything had changed.

I sat in the library, still wearing my wedding dress.

The white fabric was torn.

Stained.

A symbol of a future that no longer existed.

Alexander stood near the window.

He had barely spoken since we arrived.

I couldn't blame him.

His entire world had collapsed.

Just like mine.

"Are you going to leave?"

The question came quietly.

I looked up.

Alexander didn't turn around.

"What?"

"After everything."

His voice was tired.

"Are you going to leave me?"

My heart tightened.

"I don't know."

He closed his eyes.

That answer hurt him.

But it was honest.

And honesty was the only thing I had left.

"I spent two years believing I knew you."

He turned around.

"I knew your favorite coffee."

I listened silently.

"I knew you hated thunderstorms."

His voice became softer.

"I knew you cried during old movies even when you pretended you didn't."

A sad smile appeared.

"I knew how you looked at me when you thought I wasn't watching."

My eyes filled with tears.

"But I didn't know you were investigating my father."

I lowered my head.

"I was afraid."

"Afraid of what?"

"Losing you."

Alexander laughed quietly.

"You lost me because you were afraid of losing me."

The words hurt because they were true.

"I found documents about your father."

I finally said.

"The first time I saw them, I didn't believe them."

Alexander listened.

"I spent months trying to prove they were false."

"And?"

"They weren't."

Silence.

"I discovered he had destroyed my mother's career."

Alexander frowned.

"What?"

"My mother worked for a company connected to him."

I looked down.

"She found evidence of financial crimes."

"And then?"

"She disappeared."

Alexander looked shocked.

"Emily..."

"I thought she died."

My voice became quieter.

"Then years later, I found documents connecting Richard to what happened."

Alexander stared at me.

"And you decided to destroy him."

"I decided to expose him."

I corrected.

"But yes."

I looked at him.

"I knew it would hurt him."

"And me."

"Yes."

The honesty made my chest ache.

Alexander sat down across from me.

For the first time since everything began...

He looked less like an enemy.

More like a broken man trying to understand.

"Then why me?"

The question confused me.

"What?"

"Why did you choose me?"

I looked at him.

"Before you knew who I was..."

His voice cracked.

"Before you knew I was his son."

The answer was simple.

Because it was true.

"Because you were the first person who saw me."

He looked at me.

"Not my past."

"Not my family's pain."

"Not the woman trying to uncover the truth."

I touched my chest.

"You saw Emily."

His eyes became wet.

"And now?"

I couldn't answer.

Because I still loved him.

That was the cruelest part.

Love didn't disappear just because trust did.

Suddenly, the library doors opened.

A security officer entered.

"Mr. Whitmore."

Alexander stood.

"What happened?"

The officer looked nervous.

"We found something in the old company records."

Richard appeared behind him.

"What?"

The officer handed Alexander a folder.

"Documents from fifteen years ago."

Alexander opened it.

His expression changed immediately.

"What is this?"

The officer swallowed.

"Records showing that the collapse of Whitmore Financial..."

He paused.

"Was not caused by Miss Carter."

Everyone froze.

I stared at the papers.

"What?"

The officer continued.

"There was another person who moved the money."

Alexander looked at Richard.

"Who?"

The officer hesitated.

Then said:

"The person who caused the collapse of your father's empire..."

"Was someone inside the Whitmore family."

The room went silent.

Richard's face changed.

And for the first time...

He looked genuinely terrified.

Alexander slowly turned the page.

His eyes widened.

"No..."

I stepped closer.

"Who was it?"

Alexander looked at me.

And whispered the name.

A name that changed everything.

May you like

"My mother."
