Chapter 14: The Trial of Broken Hearts

Chapter 14: The Trial of Broken Hearts
There are moments in life when the impossible becomes the only explanation left.
A dead person returning.
A forgotten enemy appearing.
A secret hidden for fifteen years.
A family destroyed by lies.
But nothing prepared me for those words.
"The person who shot Richard Whitmore was someone who was supposed to be dead."
The room went silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because everyone was thinking the same thing.
Who?
Who could possibly be alive after all these years?
My mind immediately went to one person.
The person whose disappearance started everything.
The person whose secrets had led us here.
My mother.
But before I could speak, Alexander asked the question everyone feared.
"Who?"
Daniel looked at him.
Then at me.
His expression was filled with sadness.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Sadness.
Like he had been carrying this knowledge alone for years.
"Elizabeth Carter."
My entire body froze.
No.
That wasn't possible.
I had heard those words before.
But hearing them again didn't make them easier.
My mother.
Alive.
My mother.
The woman I buried in my heart fifteen years ago.
Alive.
"You're lying."
My voice was barely a whisper.
Daniel shook his head.
"I wish I was."
I stepped backward.
My hand moved protectively over my stomach.
"Where is she?"
Nobody answered.
"Where is my mother?"
Daniel looked away.
And that terrified me more than anything.
"Daniel."
My voice became stronger.
"Where is she?"
Finally, he said:
"I don't know."
A broken laugh escaped me.
"Of course you don't."
My tears fell.
"Everyone knows pieces of my life except me."
"Emily—"
"No."
I shook my head.
"I spent fifteen years mourning someone who was alive."
The pain in my chest was unbearable.
"Do you understand what that did to me?"
Daniel looked destroyed.
"Your mother wanted to come back."
"Then why didn't she?"
Silence.
Then he answered:
"Because every time she tried..."
He stopped.
"Someone stopped her."
The hospital became the center of everything.
Richard was awake.
The police were investigating the shooting.
Victoria was still being held.
And somehow, every person involved had a different version of the truth.
The problem was...
Someone was lying.
The question was who.
Victoria sat in the interrogation room when we arrived.
She looked exhausted.
Not dangerous.
Not angry.
Just broken.
When she saw me, her eyes filled with guilt.
"I didn't shoot him."
I studied her.
For once, I believed her.
"I know."
She looked surprised.
"You do?"
I nodded.
"Because someone wanted you to take the blame."
Victoria laughed softly.
"Funny."
"What?"
"After everything I did to you..."
She looked down.
"You're the only person who believes me."
I didn't respond.
Because forgiveness was not the same as forgetting.
"You need to tell us everything."
Victoria looked at Alexander.
"I already told you."
"No."
Alexander stepped closer.
"You told us about your pain."
His voice hardened.
"Not about your involvement."
Victoria looked away.
"I was trying to find the truth."
"By attacking Emily?"
Her face collapsed.
"I lost control."
Alexander's expression remained cold.
"That's not an excuse."
"I know."
For the first time, Victoria accepted responsibility.
"I know what I did."
She looked at me.
"I know I hurt you."
A tear fell.
"But I swear..."
"I didn't pull that trigger."
The investigation revealed something unexpected.
The gun used to shoot Richard had been planted.
The fingerprints were incomplete.
The security cameras had been disabled from inside the building.
Whoever did it knew exactly how the Whitmore security system worked.
Meaning:
It wasn't a stranger.
It was someone close.
Someone with access.
Someone who knew the family.
Again.
The same pattern.
The same enemy.
Always nearby.
Later that night, Alexander and I sat together in the library.
The room where everything had begun.
Where we found my mother's letter.
Where we discovered the hidden account.
Where our lives changed forever.
"I don't know who I am anymore."
Alexander finally said.
I looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
He stared at the old family portraits.
"My entire life, I believed my family was built on strength."
A pause.
"But it was built on secrets."
I reached for his hand.
This time, he didn't pull away.
"My father lied."
"My mother lied."
"My uncle betrayed us."
He looked at me.
"And you..."
I lowered my eyes.
"I lied too."
He nodded.
"Yes."
The honesty hurt.
"But you were trying to uncover the truth."
"I was also afraid."
"Of me?"
I looked at him.
"Of losing you."
His expression softened.
"I was angry because I thought you didn't trust me."
A pause.
"But maybe I didn't give you a reason to."
The words surprised me.
"Alexander..."
He shook his head.
"No."
He looked at me.
"We both made mistakes."
For the first time, it felt like we were standing on the same side.
Not as enemies.
Not as victims.
But as two broken people trying to understand the storm around us.
Then the hospital called.
Richard wanted to speak.
Only with Alexander and me.
When we arrived, he looked weaker than before.
But his eyes were clear.
"I know who shot me."
Alexander immediately leaned forward.
"Who?"
Richard looked at me.
"I need to tell Emily first."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"Because she deserves the truth."
A long silence.
Then Richard spoke.
"The person who shot me..."
He swallowed.
"Was your mother."
My heart stopped.
Alexander froze.
"No."
Richard nodded slowly.
"She came to the hospital before the attack."
"What?"
"She wanted answers."
I couldn't breathe.
"Then why would she shoot you?"
Richard looked away.
"Because she thought I killed someone."
"Who?"
Richard closed his eyes.
"Her sister."
I felt cold.
"Sarah?"
He nodded.
"Your aunt."
The room spun.
"But Sarah was already gone."
Richard looked at me.
"That's what everyone believed."
I stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because Elizabeth believed Sarah was the person who betrayed her."
My mind raced.
"But my mother?"
Richard looked at me sadly.
"Your mother discovered Sarah was still alive."
A pause.
"And she believed Sarah had been working with me."
"Was she?"
Richard didn't answer.
That silence terrified me.
Then he whispered:
"Emily..."
"The person who destroyed both families..."
"Was not Sarah."
"Not Jonathan."
"Not Daniel."
I held my breath.
"Then who?"
Richard looked at Alexander.
Then at me.
"The person behind everything..."
"Is the person who created this entire war."
A pause.
"The person who made every one of us blame each other."
My heart raced.
"Who?"
Richard whispered:
"Your mother."
The room went silent.
No.
That couldn't be true.
My mother?
The woman who taught me kindness?
The woman who sacrificed everything?
The woman I spent fifteen years missing?
Richard continued:
"Elizabeth did not start this because she wanted revenge."
"She started it because she discovered something terrible."
"What?"
His eyes met mine.
"She knew one of our families would destroy the other."
A pause.
"So she created a plan."
"She manipulated everyone."
"She turned enemies against each other."
I shook my head.
"No."
But deep inside...
A terrible thought appeared.
What if?
What if my mother had hidden the truth not only to protect me?
What if she had controlled the truth?
The same way everyone else did?
Richard whispered:
"Emily..."
"Your mother left one final message."
"Where?"
He looked toward the door.
And my blood froze.
Because standing there...
Was the woman I had spent fifteen years believing was dead.
My mother.
Elizabeth Carter.
Alive.
Watching me.
And the first words she said were:
"I'm sorry, Emily."
A pause.
May you like
"I know you hate me."
