Chapter 8: The Baby No One Knew About

Chapter 8: The Baby No One Knew About

The room fell silent after I said the words.

"Your uncle."

It felt like the entire world had stopped.

Alexander stared at the document in my hand.

Then at his father.

Then back at the signature.

His face slowly changed.

Not because he believed it.

Because some part of him already knew.

Some part of him had spent his entire life sensing that the perfect image of his family was only a carefully painted mask.

"No."

The word came out quietly.

"My uncle wouldn't..."

He stopped.

Because he couldn't finish the sentence.

Not because he didn't know his uncle.

Because he knew him too well.

Jonathan Whitmore.

Alexander's father's younger brother.

The charming businessman everyone loved.

The man who appeared at charity events with a smile.

The man who always told the media:

"Family is the foundation of everything."

But behind closed doors...

He was the person who had always envied Richard.

The person who had spent decades living in the shadow of his older brother.

The person who believed the Whitmore empire should have belonged to him.

"I don't understand."

Alexander looked at Richard.

"Why would Uncle Jonathan do this?"

Richard remained silent.

And that silence was terrifying.

"Father."

Richard slowly sat back down.

"Because he believed I stole his life."

Alexander frowned.

"Your life?"

Richard looked exhausted.

"Jonathan was supposed to inherit everything."

The room became still.

"But your grandfather chose me."

Alexander listened.

"From that day forward, Jonathan hated me."

Richard's voice became quieter.

"He believed I was the reason he was never respected."

Victoria whispered:

"So he destroyed you."

Richard nodded.

"He tried."

I looked at the documents again.

The pieces were finally connecting.

The collapse.

The hidden accounts.

The false evidence.

The people destroyed along the way.

But one question remained.

"If Jonathan caused all of this..."

I looked at Richard.

"Why did you let everyone believe you were responsible?"

His expression changed.

For a moment, I saw regret.

"I made mistakes."

That answer surprised me.

"I thought I could control everything."

Richard looked down.

"I thought protecting my family meant hiding the truth."

Alexander laughed bitterly.

"And you ended up destroying us anyway."

Richard didn't argue.

Because he knew it was true.

Then a sharp pain suddenly moved through my stomach.

I gasped.

Alexander immediately noticed.

"Emily?"

Everyone turned.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

"My baby..."

The fear on Alexander's face appeared instantly.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Fear.

The same fear I had felt when I fell.

He rushed toward me.

"Are you okay?"

I wanted to say yes.

But the pain made it difficult.

"I don't know."

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

The secrets.

The betrayal.

The hatred.

There was only one thing that mattered.

Our child.

Alexander placed a hand near my shoulder.

"Call the doctor."

The security officer immediately reached for his phone.

Victoria watched silently.

And for the first time all day...

I saw shame on her face.

The hospital was quiet.

Too quiet.

I sat on the examination bed while the doctor checked the baby's heartbeat.

Alexander stood beside me.

But he didn't touch me.

Not because he didn't care.

Because there was too much between us.

Too many wounds.

Too many unanswered questions.

The doctor finally smiled.

"The baby is okay."

A wave of relief passed through me.

I closed my eyes.

Thank God.

"The fall caused stress, but fortunately there are no signs of serious injury."

Alexander released a breath I didn't realize he was holding.

"Can we see the heartbeat?"

The doctor nodded.

A moment later, the room filled with a sound.

A tiny heartbeat.

Fast.

Strong.

Alive.

I looked at the screen.

And tears filled my eyes.

That little life knew nothing about betrayal.

Nothing about revenge.

Nothing about the darkness surrounding us.

The baby only knew how to survive.

Alexander stared at the monitor.

His expression broke.

For the first time since the wedding disaster began...

I saw the old Alexander.

The man who loved me.

The man who dreamed about becoming a father.

"That's our baby."

His voice was barely a whisper.

I nodded.

"Yes."

Silence.

Then he asked:

"Did you ever plan to tell me?"

The question hurt.

Because I knew exactly what he meant.

Not about the baby.

About everything.

"The baby?"

"No."

He looked at me.

"The truth."

My eyes lowered.

"I was going to."

"When?"

I didn't answer.

Because I didn't know.

Maybe after the wedding.

Maybe after we were married.

Maybe after I convinced myself the past was gone.

Alexander looked away.

"That's the problem."

"What?"

"You always planned to tell me later."

His voice cracked.

"And later kept becoming tomorrow."

I closed my eyes.

Because he was right.

When we returned to Whitmore Manor that evening, something had changed.

Not because the truth was clearer.

It wasn't.

There were still too many secrets.

Too many missing pieces.

But something had shifted between Alexander and me.

The hatred was gone.

Not the pain.

Not the distrust.

But the hatred.

And sometimes, that was the first step toward healing.

We entered the library.

Richard was waiting.

But he wasn't alone.

A woman stood beside him.

A woman I had never seen before.

She looked nervous.

Almost afraid.

"Emily."

Richard spoke.

"This is someone you need to meet."

The woman stepped forward.

"I'm sorry."

Her voice trembled.

"I should have come sooner."

I looked at Alexander.

Then back at her.

"Who are you?"

The woman took a deep breath.

"My name is Clara Bennett."

The name meant nothing to me.

Until she continued.

"I worked with your mother."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"I was there the night she disappeared."

Everyone became silent.

Again.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another piece of the puzzle.

"Tell me."

My voice was quiet.

"What happened to my mother?"

Clara looked down.

"Your mother discovered the truth about Jonathan Whitmore."

Alexander's face tightened.

"And?"

Clara looked at him.

"She also discovered something else."

"What?"

The woman hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Jonathan wasn't working alone."

The room froze.

Richard stepped forward.

"Who else?"

Clara looked at me.

Her eyes filled with sadness.

"Someone much closer."

My stomach dropped.

"Who?"

She looked toward Alexander.

And said:

"Someone connected to your child."

The room went completely silent.

Alexander's face changed.

"What does that mean?"

Clara's voice shook.

"It means..."

She looked at my pregnant belly.

"The baby you are carrying may be the last key to uncovering the truth."

My blood ran cold.

"What?"

Clara continued.

"Because fifteen years ago, your mother hid something."

A pause.

"Something that proves who really destroyed both families."

I touched my stomach instinctively.

The baby.

My child.

How could a baby be connected to all this?

Then Clara said the words that changed everything:

"Emily, your mother didn't disappear to escape."

She looked at me.

May you like

"She disappeared to protect you."
