Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Betrayal

Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Betrayal

For years, I believed betrayal had a face.

I believed it looked like a stranger.

Someone who entered your life with hidden intentions.

Someone who smiled while holding a knife behind their back.

But I was wrong.

The most painful betrayal doesn't come from an enemy.

It comes from the person who knows exactly where your heart is and chooses to destroy it anyway.

Victoria Hale stood in the center of the bridal suite, completely silent.

The woman who had once helped me choose my wedding dress.

The woman who had cried when I told her Alexander proposed.

The woman who had promised me, "I will stand beside you when you become his wife."

Now she stood exposed.

Not as my friend.

Not as my maid of honor.

But as the person who had carefully planned the collapse of my entire life.

Alexander looked at his father.

Then at Victoria.

Then finally at me.

His expression was impossible to read.

"Someone explain this."

His voice was low.

Controlled.

But I knew him well enough to hear the storm underneath.

Richard Whitmore adjusted his suit jacket calmly.

Too calmly.

"Your fiancée was investigating me."

Alexander frowned.

"What?"

Richard looked at me.

"Tell him."

My throat tightened.

I didn't want to.

Not like this.

Not in front of Alexander.

Not when every word I spoke could sound like another excuse.

But the truth had already been dragged into the light.

So I nodded.

"I found evidence."

Alexander stared at me.

"Evidence of what?"

I took a breath.

"Your father's company was involved in illegal financial manipulation."

His face changed.

"That's impossible."

"I thought so too."

I looked at Richard.

"At first."

The older man smiled faintly.

A smile without warmth.

"You see, Alexander, everyone thinks your father built his empire through intelligence and hard work."

He paused.

"But some fortunes are built on things people don't want discovered."

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"My father is not a criminal."

"I didn't say he was."

I looked at him.

"I said he was hiding something."

The room became painfully quiet.

Victoria suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned toward her.

A strange, broken sound.

"You still don't get it."

Her eyes moved to me.

"You really still think you're the hero."

I stared at her.

"What are you talking about?"

She stepped forward.

"You destroyed his family."

"No."

"You did."

Her voice rose.

"You think because you found some documents, because you convinced yourself you were doing the right thing, that it makes you innocent?"

My heart sank.

Because underneath her anger...

I heard something else.

Pain.

Deep pain.

"Victoria..."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You don't get to say my name like we're still friends."

The words hurt.

Because once, they would have broken me.

Now they only made me tired.

"Why?"

I whispered.

"Why would you do this?"

Her expression changed.

For a moment, I saw the girl I knew.

The girl who used to laugh with me.

The girl who shared secrets with me.

Then it disappeared.

"Because of you."

I frowned.

"Because of me?"

She nodded.

"You always had everything."

I almost laughed.

"Everything?"

"Yes."

Her voice became bitter.

"You had the perfect life."

I stared at her.

"Victoria, you know that's not true."

"You had a family."

My breath stopped.

She continued.

"You had people who loved you."

The room became colder.

"You had a future."

A tear slipped down her face.

"And I lost mine."

I didn't understand.

"What happened?"

She looked at Richard.

Then back at me.

"Ask him."

Everyone turned toward Richard.

His expression remained calm.

Too calm.

"What does she mean?"

Alexander asked.

Richard didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation told me everything.

"You knew."

I whispered.

Richard looked at me.

"You knew what?"

"You knew about Victoria."

His silence was confirmation.

Alexander looked shocked.

"Father?"

Richard sighed.

"This is complicated."

"No."

Alexander's voice hardened.

"I am done hearing that word."

He stepped closer.

"Every time someone is caught hiding something, they say it's complicated."

His eyes moved between us.

"I want the truth."

For the first time, Richard looked uncomfortable.

Then he spoke.

"Victoria's father worked for me."

Victoria's face tightened.

"He was loyal."

Richard continued.

"Until he made a mistake."

"What mistake?"

Alexander asked.

Richard looked away.

"He discovered information he shouldn't have."

A chill ran through me.

"What information?"

Richard didn't answer.

Victoria did.

"The truth about your father."

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her tears.

"My father found out Richard Whitmore was moving money through fake companies."

Alexander shook his head.

"No."

"Yes."

Victoria's voice trembled.

"He tried to expose him."

Richard's expression hardened.

"And failed."

Those two words destroyed the room.

Victoria stared at him.

"My father lost everything because of you."

Richard didn't deny it.

Instead, he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Your father lost everything because he was weak."

Alexander looked horrified.

"Father..."

I watched him.

The man he had spent his entire life admiring.

The man whose approval he had always wanted.

Slowly becoming someone he didn't recognize.

Victoria pointed at me.

"And then she came along."

I looked at her.

"I don't understand."

"You found the documents."

"Yes."

"You exposed his crimes."

"Yes."

"Do you know what happened after that?"

Her voice cracked.

"My father was blamed too."

I froze.

"What?"

"He was accused of helping him."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"Nobody believed he was innocent."

The pieces started falling together.

Her hatred.

Her anger.

Her obsession.

"You think I ruined your life."

I whispered.

"You think I destroyed your family."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because you did."

I looked down.

And for the first time...

I understood.

Victoria wasn't just angry.

She was broken.

But broken people could still become dangerous.

And she had chosen revenge instead of justice.

Alexander looked at me.

"Did you know?"

I met his eyes.

"No."

The answer came immediately.

"I didn't know her father was involved."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

I had no answer.

Because that was the question I feared most.

Why had I hidden the truth from him?

Because I was afraid.

Afraid that if Alexander knew his father was my enemy, he would see me differently.

Afraid that love would disappear the moment he discovered the darkness surrounding my past.

And now...

That fear had become reality.

"I wanted to protect you."

Alexander laughed softly.

A painful laugh.

"You protected me by lying to me?"

Tears filled my eyes.

"No."

I whispered.

"I protected myself."

The honesty surprised everyone.

Including me.

Because that was the truth.

I wasn't only afraid of losing him.

I was afraid of facing what I had done.

Richard suddenly interrupted.

"Enough."

His voice was sharp.

Everyone looked at him.

"There is still one thing none of you know."

He reached inside his jacket.

And pulled out a small envelope.

My blood ran cold.

"What is that?"

Richard looked at Alexander.

"The reason your wedding was never supposed to happen."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

He handed the envelope to Alexander.

"Inside is proof that your fiancée's investigation was only the beginning."

Alexander opened it.

His eyes scanned the papers.

Then slowly...

His face changed.

Not anger.

Not betrayal.

Something worse.

Fear.

"What is this?"

Richard looked at me.

"Your mother."

My entire body froze.

"My mother?"

Richard nodded.

"She knew the truth about my company years ago."

I felt dizzy.

"That's impossible."

He lowered his voice.

"Your mother didn't die because of an accident."

The room disappeared.

The sound around me faded.

I could only hear my own heartbeat.

No.

That wasn't possible.

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman I lost when I was eighteen.

Her death had always been called an accident.

A car crash.

A tragic mistake.

But Richard Whitmore was telling me something impossible.

"You are lying."

My voice shook.

Richard looked at me.

"I wish I was."

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"Your mother was the first person who tried to expose me."

I felt Alexander grab the papers tighter.

Victoria stared in shock.

And suddenly, the wedding was no longer about a broken engagement.

It was about something much bigger.

A secret buried for years.

A secret that connected all of us.

And as I stood there in my torn wedding dress, I finally understood.

Victoria wasn't the beginning of the betrayal.

May you like

She was only another victim.

The real betrayal had started long before I ever met Alexander Whitmore.
