Chapter 11: The Hidden Account

Chapter 11: The Hidden Account
The world stopped.
For one impossible second, nobody moved.
The emergency lights painted the room in a dark red glow.
The press conference that was supposed to reveal the truth had become another crime scene.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
And in the center of it all stood Victoria.
Her hand was shaking.
The weapon in her grip looked impossibly heavy.
But the expression on her face was not one of victory.
It was terror.
"Victoria..."
Alexander's voice was quiet.
Almost unrecognizable.
She looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I didn't do this."
Nobody believed her.
Not at first.
Because the evidence was standing right in front of us.
A weapon.
A victim.
A room full of witnesses.
It was exactly what someone would expect to see.
And that was the problem.
Someone had designed this moment.
Just like the wedding.
Just like the recording.
Just like every disaster that had destroyed our lives.
I looked at Victoria carefully.
She was many things.
Angry.
Broken.
Dangerous.
But she wasn't calm enough to commit a perfect crime.
She looked like someone who had just realized she had been used.
"Who was shot?"
Alexander asked.
Nobody answered.
The security team moved forward carefully.
Then I saw the person lying on the ground.
My blood turned cold.
"Richard."
Alexander ran toward his father.
The room exploded into chaos.
Security officers pushed everyone back.
Someone called emergency services.
Victoria dropped the weapon.
"I swear..."
Her voice broke.
"I didn't shoot him."
Alexander looked at her with disbelief.
"Then why were you holding the gun?"
She opened her mouth.
No answer.
Because she didn't know.
And somehow, that frightened me more.
Twenty minutes later, Richard was taken to the hospital.
The bullet had missed his heart.
He was alive.
But unconscious.
The police arrived quickly.
And Victoria became the first suspect.
No one listened when she said she was innocent.
Because everyone had already decided who she was.
The jealous friend.
The angry woman.
The person who attacked a pregnant bride.
The person who wanted revenge.
The truth was no longer important.
The story was easier without it.
Alexander stood beside me in the hallway.
His face was pale.
"You believe her."
It wasn't a question.
I looked at him.
"I believe she is capable of terrible things."
He nodded slowly.
"But?"
"But I don't think she did this."
Alexander looked surprised.
"Why?"
"Because someone wanted us to find her with that weapon."
I looked toward the police questioning room.
"Someone wanted the world to stop looking deeper."
Alexander was silent.
Then he whispered:
"Like the wedding."
I nodded.
"Exactly."
Hours passed.
Then the doctor came out.
"Mr. Whitmore is awake."
Alexander immediately stood.
"Can we see him?"
The doctor hesitated.
"Only briefly."
Inside the hospital room, Richard looked different.
The powerful businessman was gone.
He looked like an old man who had finally become tired of carrying his secrets.
When he saw Alexander, his eyes softened.
"You came."
Alexander stood beside the bed.
"Of course I came."
A pause.
"But I still don't know if I can forgive you."
Richard closed his eyes.
"I know."
For the first time, he didn't defend himself.
He didn't explain.
He simply accepted the pain.
"Who shot you?"
Alexander asked.
Richard was silent.
Then his eyes moved toward me.
"Emily."
I froze.
"Me?"
"No."
He shook his head.
"Not you."
His voice became weaker.
"The person who knows what you found."
My heart tightened.
"What did I find?"
Richard looked at Alexander.
"Your mother was right."
Alexander stepped closer.
"About what?"
Richard whispered:
"The hidden account."
Everyone became still.
"What account?"
Richard struggled to breathe.
"The account that connects Jonathan... the Blackthorn Circle... and the person who has been controlling everything."
Alexander looked at him.
"Where is it?"
Richard looked at me.
"Your mother hid it."
I shook my head.
"Where?"
Richard closed his eyes.
"She left clues."
"What clues?"
He opened his eyes again.
"The first one was never meant for you."
My confusion grew.
"Then who was it meant for?"
Richard looked at Alexander.
"Your child."
The room became silent.
Again.
That sentence.
The baby.
Why was everyone connecting everything to my unborn child?
"Stop saying that."
My voice trembled.
"My baby has nothing to do with your family's crimes."
Richard looked at me sadly.
"You're wrong."
I froze.
"Your child has everything to do with them."
Alexander stepped forward.
"Explain."
Richard took a slow breath.
"Fifteen years ago, Elizabeth Carter discovered that the Blackthorn Circle was using families to hide their money."
He looked at me.
"She knew they would come after her."
"So she hid the evidence."
"Yes."
"Where?"
Richard looked toward the window.
"In the one place nobody would search."
My eyebrows tightened.
"Where?"
His answer was barely audible.
"Inside the Whitmore bloodline."
Nobody understood.
Until Alexander looked at me.
Then at my stomach.
His face changed.
"No..."
Richard nodded.
"Your mother knew that one day you would have a child connected to this family."
My heart raced.
"She hid something in the family records."
"What?"
"The proof."
Richard closed his eyes.
"The evidence that can destroy everyone responsible."
That night, Alexander and I returned to the manor.
Neither of us spoke much.
There were too many questions.
Too many fears.
Finally, Alexander stopped in the old archive room.
"The family records."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"Your mother hid something here."
I remembered Clara's words.
The evidence.
The secret.
The truth.
Together, we searched through old documents.
Birth records.
Family histories.
Financial reports.
Everything connected to the Whitmore family.
Hours passed.
Then Alexander found something.
A small wooden box hidden behind an old shelf.
My heart began beating faster.
"This was here the entire time?"
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a single envelope.
No name.
No date.
Only one sentence written on the front.
My breath stopped.
Because I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My mother's.
The words said:
"For Emily, when she finally learns who Alexander truly is."
I stared at the envelope.
Alexander looked at me.
Neither of us moved.
Because we both knew.
Whatever was inside...
May you like
would change everything.
