Chapter 4: A Marriage Built on Lies

Chapter 4: A Marriage Built on Lies
The wedding was supposed to begin at three o'clock.
The guests were already seated.
The flowers had been arranged.
The musicians were waiting.
Hundreds of candles were ready to illuminate the aisle where I was supposed to walk toward Alexander and promise him forever.
But instead of vows, there were accusations.
Instead of happiness, there was a war.
And instead of becoming Alexander Whitmore's wife...
I was standing in a bridal suite surrounded by secrets that had been buried for years.
I stared at the envelope in Alexander's hands.
The same envelope that had just destroyed the last piece of certainty I had about my own life.
"My mother..."
The words barely escaped my lips.
"How could she be connected to this?"
Nobody answered.
Because everyone in that room knew the truth was dangerous.
Richard Whitmore watched me carefully.
Almost like he was waiting for me to break.
I refused.
I had already fallen once today.
I would not fall again.
"Show me."
My voice surprised even myself.
Alexander looked at me.
"What?"
"The documents."
His eyes softened for a second.
Only a second.
Then the walls came back.
"Why?"
The question hurt.
Because I knew what he was asking.
Why should he trust me?
Why should he believe anything I said?
After everything he had heard.
"Because if my mother's name is in there..."
I looked at Richard.
"I deserve to know why."
Alexander looked down at the papers.
Then slowly handed them to me.
My fingers shook as I opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of old financial records.
Company transfers.
Internal reports.
Legal documents.
And one photograph.
The moment I saw it...
I stopped breathing.
It was my mother.
Standing beside Richard Whitmore.
They were younger.
Much younger.
But there was no mistaking them.
"What is this?"
My voice trembled.
Richard answered.
"Your mother worked with me."
I looked at him.
"She worked for you?"
"Yes."
"Doing what?"
His expression became unreadable.
"Investigating me."
The room became silent.
I looked back at the photograph.
My mother had always been the strongest person I knew.
She taught me never to ignore injustice.
She taught me that doing the right thing was sometimes painful.
But she never told me she had been fighting someone like Richard Whitmore.
"She knew."
I whispered.
"She knew what you were doing."
Richard nodded.
"She discovered things she shouldn't have."
"And then she died."
The words came out sharper than I intended.
Everyone became still.
Richard looked at me.
"I know what you believe."
"What I believe?"
I laughed bitterly.
"You mean what you know."
His eyes narrowed.
"Be careful."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"You be careful."
For years, I had wondered why my mother died.
For years, I had accepted the explanation because I had no choice.
But now, standing in front of the man connected to her final days...
I couldn't pretend anymore.
"You took everything from me."
Richard's expression changed slightly.
"Your mother made choices."
"She made choices because she was trying to stop you."
"She was reckless."
My hands clenched.
"And you are a coward."
Alexander immediately looked at me.
Not because he disagreed.
Because he had never heard anyone speak to his father that way.
Richard Whitmore was a man people feared.
A man who controlled rooms without raising his voice.
But I wasn't afraid anymore.
Not after losing everything.
Victoria watched silently.
For the first time since this nightmare began, she looked uncertain.
Because she was realizing something.
This wasn't just about revenge.
This was bigger than both of us.
"Tell him."
Victoria suddenly spoke.
Everyone turned.
She looked at Richard.
"Tell Alexander what you did."
Richard's expression hardened.
"I have told him enough."
"No."
Victoria shook her head.
"You told him a version that protects you."
Alexander looked at his father.
"What is she talking about?"
Richard remained silent.
That silence was the answer.
Alexander's face changed.
"Father."
The word sounded like a warning.
"Tell me."
Richard sighed.
"You don't understand the circumstances."
"I don't care."
Alexander stepped forward.
"For once in my life, I want the truth."
The room became tense.
Finally, Richard spoke.
"Your mother was involved too."
Alexander froze.
"My mother?"
"She knew."
Richard said.
"She knew about the financial arrangements."
"No."
Alexander shook his head.
"My mother would never—"
"She did."
Richard interrupted.
"And when she discovered what I was doing, she tried to expose me."
I watched Alexander.
The pain on his face was familiar.
Because it was the same pain I felt.
The realization that the people who raised you were not always the people you believed them to be.
"I don't understand."
Alexander whispered.
Richard looked at him.
"You were never supposed to know."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
Then my phone rang.
Everyone looked toward it.
The sound was strange.
Unexpected.
I reached into my ruined wedding dress and pulled it out.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something inside me told me not to.
I answered.
"Hello?"
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a woman's voice spoke.
A voice I hadn't heard in years.
A voice that made my entire body freeze.
"Emily?"
My heart stopped.
Because only one person called me that way.
Only one person had that voice.
"Mom?"
The room went completely silent.
Alexander stared at me.
Victoria stopped breathing.
Richard's face turned pale.
The voice on the phone trembled.
"Emily, listen carefully."
Tears filled my eyes.
"This is impossible."
"I don't have much time."
My knees almost gave out.
"Mom... you're alive?"
A pause.
Then:
"Yes."
The world shattered again.
My mother was alive.
The woman I had mourned for fifteen years.
The woman whose death had shaped every decision I ever made.
She was alive.
And she had been hiding.
"Where are you?"
I whispered.
"I can't tell you."
"Why?"
"Because Richard will find me."
Everyone looked at Richard.
His expression had completely changed.
For the first time...
He looked afraid.
My mother continued.
"Emily, the man you think destroyed your life..."
A pause.
"He didn't do it alone."
My breathing stopped.
"What do you mean?"
"You need to know the truth about Alexander."
My eyes moved toward him.
Alexander looked confused.
"Me?"
My mother's voice became urgent.
"Your fiancé is not who you think he is."
The phone suddenly crackled.
"Mom?"
Static.
"Mom!"
Then the call ended.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
Alexander stared at me.
"What did she mean?"
I didn't know.
I truly didn't know.
But one thing had become clear.
The wedding was never about two people promising forever.
It was a carefully designed battlefield.

And every person in this room was hiding something.
Including the man I loved.
