Chapter 15: The Price of Revenge

Chapter 15: The Price of Revenge

For fifteen years, I imagined this moment.

The moment when I would see my mother again.

I imagined running toward her.

I imagined falling into her arms.

I imagined feeling safe.

Because no matter how old you become, some part of you always remains the child who misses their mother.

But reality was cruel.

The woman standing in front of me was not the mother I remembered.

She was a stranger wearing a familiar face.

A woman carrying fifteen years of secrets.

A woman who had watched me mourn her while she was alive.

"Emily..."

Her voice broke.

"I know what you're thinking."

I stared at her.

"Do you?"

The question surprised her.

Good.

Because I needed her to understand.

"You don't know what I was thinking every day for fifteen years."

My voice trembled.

"You don't know what it felt like to wake up and remember that my mother was gone."

"You don't know what it felt like to graduate."

"To fall in love."

"To become pregnant."

"And every single important moment..."

I swallowed.

"You weren't there."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I wanted to be."

"Then why weren't you?"

Silence.

The most painful answer was always the one people refused to say.

Finally, she whispered:

"Because I was afraid."

I laughed bitterly.

"Afraid?"

I looked at Richard.

"Everyone is always afraid."

I looked at Alexander.

"Everyone has a reason."

Then back at my mother.

"But somehow, I am always the person who pays the price."

Her expression broke.

And for the first time...

I saw my mother cry.

Alexander stood beside me.

Quiet.

Watching.

I knew this was painful for him too.

Because my mother wasn't just part of my story.

She was part of his.

She was the person who had exposed the darkness surrounding his family.

The person who had shaped every event that brought us here.

"Elizabeth."

Alexander's voice was controlled.

"Tell us the truth."

My mother looked at him.

"I owe both of you that."

She walked slowly into the room.

She looked at Richard.

At Alexander.

At me.

Then she said:

"I never wanted any of this to happen."

Richard laughed softly.

A bitter sound.

"You created this entire war."

My mother looked at him.

"No."

Her voice became stronger.

"I exposed a war that already existed."

The room became silent.

She continued.

"Fifteen years ago, I discovered the Blackthorn Circle."

Clara listened carefully.

"I thought Richard was the center of it."

She looked at him.

"I was wrong."

Richard lowered his eyes.

"Then who?"

My mother answered:

"Jonathan."

Everyone already suspected.

But hearing it again made it real.

"He was the one moving money."

"He was the one manipulating accounts."

"He was the one creating fake evidence."

Alexander clenched his fists.

"Why?"

My mother looked at him.

"Because Jonathan believed the Whitmore empire belonged to him."

A pause.

"He didn't want to destroy your father."

"He wanted to replace him."

I looked at my mother.

"Then why did you disappear?"

Her eyes filled with pain.

"Because I found out Jonathan wasn't working alone."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

She looked at me.

And that answer hurt more than anything.

"Someone I loved."

The room became still.

"Who?"

My mother looked down.

"Your uncle Daniel."

I froze.

Even after everything...

Hearing it from her made it real.

"No."

She nodded sadly.

"I'm sorry."

"Why?"

My voice broke.

"Why would he do that?"

My mother closed her eyes.

"Because revenge changes people."

She looked at Richard.

"Your father destroyed Daniel's family."

I frowned.

"What?"

My mother continued.

"Years ago, Daniel discovered that Richard had covered up evidence connected to my father's death."

Richard looked shocked.

"What?"

My mother turned to him.

"You didn't know."

The silence was terrifying.

"You thought Jonathan was your only enemy."

Richard stared at her.

"My company..."

"Was destroyed by many hands."

She nodded.

"Everyone had a reason."

Everyone had pain.

Everyone wanted someone else to blame.

And that was exactly what made them dangerous.

Alexander looked at my mother.

"So everyone was trying to get revenge."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"And you?"

My mother went silent.

The question hit her.

"Did you want revenge too?"

For a long moment...

She said nothing.

Then:

"Yes."

The honesty shocked everyone.

"I hated Richard."

She looked at him.

"I blamed him for everything."

A tear fell.

"I wanted him to lose everything."

Richard looked away.

"But then I discovered the truth."

My mother continued.

"I realized destroying him would not bring back the people we lost."

Her eyes moved to me.

"It would only create more victims."

I felt my anger weaken.

Not disappear.

But change.

Because now I understood.

My mother was not a hero.

She was not a villain.

She was a person who was hurt.

And hurt people could make terrible choices.

"Then why leave me?"

I asked.

The question I had carried for fifteen years.

My mother looked at me.

"Because Jonathan found out you existed."

I froze.

"What?"

"He knew you were my weakness."

Her voice trembled.

"He knew I would do anything to protect you."

A pause.

"So I disappeared."

She touched her chest.

"Every day away from you destroyed me."

"Then why not come back?"

"Because every time I tried..."

She looked terrified.

"They threatened you."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

She whispered:

"Jonathan."

Suddenly, Alexander's phone rang.

Everyone looked at him.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

A voice came through.

A voice we all recognized.

Jonathan Whitmore.

"Family reunion?"

Alexander froze.

Everyone heard it.

Jonathan laughed.

"I knew eventually you would find her."

My mother's face turned pale.

"Jonathan."

His voice became colder.

"Elizabeth."

A pause.

"You should have stayed hidden."

Alexander stepped closer to the phone.

"Where are you?"

Jonathan laughed.

"You still think this ends with finding the villain."

Silence.

"The truth is..."

His voice lowered.

"Everyone in this story has blood on their hands."

The call crackled.

Then he said:

"But Emily has the most important piece."

My hand moved protectively over my stomach.

Alexander's expression changed.

"What do you want?"

Jonathan answered:

"What I always wanted."

A pause.

"The Whitmore empire."

Then the line went dead.

Nobody spoke.

The truth was finally appearing.

But instead of bringing peace...

It created another war.

My mother looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

I looked at her.

"For what?"

She swallowed.

"For making you carry a battle you never chose."

I looked at Alexander.

At our unborn child.

At the family secrets surrounding us.

Then I realized something.

Revenge had a price.

Everyone had paid it.

Richard lost his empire.

Victoria lost herself.

Alexander lost his family.

My mother lost fifteen years of my life.

And I...

I almost lost the future I was trying to build.

But there was still one question.

The most important question.

If revenge had destroyed all of them...

Would we become the same?

Or would we finally break the cycle?

That night, Alexander found something hidden inside the envelope with my mother's letter.

A small memory card.

No label.

No explanation.

Only one sentence written on it.

My mother's handwriting.

"The final truth. Play this only when you are ready to know who started everything."

Alexander looked at me.

"Are you ready?"

I stared at the memory card.

The last secret.

The final confession.

I took a deep breath.

"No."

A pause.

"But we need to know."

He pressed play.

The screen turned black.

Then a voice appeared.

A voice neither of us expected.

A voice that changed everything.

"If you are hearing this, then I am already gone."

My heart stopped.

Because it wasn't my mother's voice.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been dead for years.

Someone whose name had started this entire nightmare.

May you like

"My name is Sarah Carter."
