Chapter 1: The Call From The Dead

Chapter 1: The Call From The Dead

The rain came down like the sky itself was trying to erase what had happened.

Emily Carter stood in the middle of the Blackwood mansion driveway, barefoot, shaking, and covered in blood.

Not all of it was hers.

The enormous Victorian mansion behind her stood silent, its windows glowing faintly against the darkness. For years, people in the city had called it a palace. A symbol of wealth, power, and the untouchable Blackwood family.

Tonight, it looked like a grave.

Emily pressed one hand against the wound on her shoulder. The pain was sharp, but it was nothing compared to the fear crawling through her veins.

She had learned something tonight.

Something she was never supposed to discover.

The Blackwoods had a secret.

And now they knew she knew.

Her fingers trembled as she reached into her torn dress pocket and pulled out her phone.

The screen was cracked.

Three missed calls.

All from Ryan.

She stared at his name for a long moment.

Ryan Blackwood.

Her husband.

The man who had promised to protect her.

The man who had just tried to find out whether she was lying.

The man who, only twenty minutes ago, had looked at her with hatred in his eyes.

"You were never innocent, were you, Emily?"

His words still echoed inside her mind.

She closed her eyes.

No.

She couldn't call Ryan.

Not tonight.

Not after what she had seen.

Not after what she had heard.

Because if Ryan was involved…

then she had no one left.

Except him.

The one person she promised herself she would never contact again.

The one person who was supposed to be dead.

Emily unlocked her phone.

Her thumb hovered over a number she had not touched in ten years.

A number that should have been deleted.

A number that should have belonged to a ghost.

Her breathing became heavier.

"No," she whispered.

A flash of lightning illuminated the driveway.

For a second, she saw the reflection of herself in the black window of a parked car.

A woman who looked like a stranger.

A woman with blood on her face.

A woman who had lost everything.

Then she pressed the call button.

Three thousand miles away, somewhere hidden from the world, an old phone began to ring.

The sound echoed through a dark room.

A man sat alone beside a wooden desk covered with old photographs, documents, and newspaper clippings.

He froze when he saw the number.

His hand slowly reached for the phone.

He stared at it.

Impossible.

That number had not appeared on his screen for ten years.

Because the woman who owned it believed he was dead.

Everyone believed he was dead.

The man finally answered.

For several seconds, neither side spoke.

Then a broken voice whispered:

"Alexander?"

The man's expression changed instantly.

A decade of pain.

A decade of hiding.

A decade of waiting.

All disappeared in one second.

"Emily."

Her breath caught.

Hearing his voice made everything real.

"You’re alive."

Alexander Vale closed his eyes.

"I was hoping you would never have to find out."

A tear slipped down Emily's face.

Not because she was happy.

Because she was terrified.

"They know," she whispered.

The silence on the other end was immediate.

"Who?"

"The Blackwoods."

Alexander stood up.

His calm disappeared.

"What happened?"

Emily looked back at the mansion.

The place where she had entered as Ryan Blackwood's wife.

The place where she had believed she could finally have a normal life.

The place where she had discovered the truth.

"They found your file."

Alexander stopped breathing.

"My file?"

"Your real file."

The rain continued falling.

"They know you weren't killed in the accident."

A long silence followed.

Then Alexander asked quietly:

"Who showed you?"

Emily swallowed.

"Ryan."

The name hit him harder than any bullet.

"Ryan Blackwood knows?"

"No," Emily said quickly. "Not everything. But his mother does."

Alexander's grip tightened around the phone.

Victoria Blackwood.

The woman who destroyed his life.

The woman who made the entire world believe he was dead.

The woman who buried the truth beneath money, power, and lies.

"Emily, listen to me carefully."

His voice became serious.

"You need to leave that house."

She looked toward the mansion.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because I found Daniel's documents."

Alexander went completely silent.

Daniel Carter.

Emily's father.

The man whose death had been labeled an accident.

The man whose reputation had been destroyed by the Blackwoods.

The man who had left Emily nothing except questions.

"What documents?" Alexander asked.

Emily's voice trembled.

"The documents proving my father was murdered."

The room around Alexander seemed to become colder.

For ten years, he had waited for this moment.

But he had never expected Emily to be the one who found the truth.

"Where are they?"

"Hidden inside the mansion."

"Emily—"

"And there's something else."

"What?"

She looked up at the second floor window.

A shadow moved behind the curtain.

Her heart stopped.

"Someone is watching me."

Alexander immediately became alert.

"Get away from the house."

"I can't."

"Emily, listen to me!"

His voice was louder now.

"The person who killed your father is still alive."

Emily closed her eyes.

"I know."

Another silence.

Then Alexander asked:

"How?"

Her answer came softly.

"Because he was standing in front of me tonight."

The rain became heavier.

Alexander felt his blood turn cold.

"Who?"

Emily looked at the mansion.

At the place where Ryan Blackwood had disappeared moments before.

At the man who had kissed her, lied to her, and protected her all at the same time.

"Ryan."

Inside the mansion, Ryan Blackwood stood in the darkness of the second-floor hallway.

He watched Emily through the window.

He had followed her outside because he thought she was running away.

He thought she was hiding something.

He thought she had betrayed him.

But then he heard the name.

Alexander.

His entire body froze.

Because that name was impossible.

Alexander Vale was dead.

Ryan remembered the funeral.

He remembered the photographs.

He remembered his father's words:

"Some people are dangerous even after death."

But now…

Emily had called him.

Ryan slowly stepped away from the window.

For the first time in years, he felt something he hated.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not jealousy.

Not suspicion.

Fear.

Because if Alexander Vale was alive…

then everything Ryan knew about his family was a lie.

His father.

His mother.

His entire empire.

All built on something rotten.

His phone suddenly rang.

Ryan looked down.

The caller ID made his face change.

"Mother."

He answered.

"Ryan."

Victoria Blackwood's voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Where is Emily?"

Ryan looked outside.

The woman he thought he understood was standing in the rain, talking to a dead man.

"I don't know."

A pause.

Then Victoria spoke quietly:

"Find her."

Ryan frowned.

"Why?"

Another pause.

Then his mother's answer froze him.

"Because if Alexander Vale is alive..."

Her voice dropped.

"...then we are all already dead."

The call ended.

Ryan stood motionless.

For the first time in his life, the Blackwood name did not feel powerful.

It felt cursed.

Outside, Emily ended the call.

Her hands were shaking.

Alexander's final words repeated in her mind.

"Trust no one inside that house."

She turned toward the mansion.

Toward Ryan.

Toward the life she thought she had built.

But before she could move, headlights appeared at the end of the driveway.

A black car slowly approached.

Emily stepped back.

The car stopped.

The door opened.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Scarred.

Carrying a familiar look in his eyes.

Emily couldn't move.

Because she knew that face.

Everyone said he died ten years ago.

Everyone said his body was never found.

Everyone said Alexander Vale was gone forever.

But he was standing in front of her.

Alive.

And the first words he spoke destroyed everything she believed.

"Emily Carter..."

His voice was cold.

"You should never have called me."

The rain fell harder.

Emily whispered:

"Alexander?"

The man looked toward the mansion.

Then back at her.

"No."

A strange fear appeared in his eyes.

"Because the man you called..."

He took a step closer.

May you like

"...is not the only dead man who came back tonight."
