Chapter 6: A Marriage Built On Revenge

Chapter 6: A Marriage Built On Revenge

The hidden room became silent after Victoria's words.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that came before a storm.

Everyone stood frozen.

Ryan looked at Michael.

Emily looked at Ryan.

And Michael looked like a man who had just been forced to open a door he had spent ten years keeping locked.

"Tell him."

Victoria's voice was calm.

Almost amused.

"Tell my son the truth."

Michael didn't move.

Ryan's eyes narrowed.

"What is she talking about?"

No answer.

"Michael."

His voice became colder.

"What is she talking about?"

Michael looked at Emily.

For a second, she saw something in his eyes.

Regret.

Then he looked back at Ryan.

"Your mother is right about one thing."

Ryan's expression hardened.

"Which is?"

"Not everything you believe is true."

Victoria smiled.

"Finally."

She stepped into the room.

"You spent years blaming me for Alexander's disappearance. For your father's secrets. For Emily's pain."

She looked at Ryan.

"But the person standing beside you has been hiding the biggest lie of all."

Emily immediately stepped between them.

"Stop."

Victoria looked at her.

"You don't even know what you are defending."

Emily's voice was firm.

"Leave."

Victoria laughed softly.

"Still protecting him?"

She looked at Ryan.

"Interesting."

Ryan frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Victoria looked at Emily.

"Ask your wife why she married you."

The room went cold.

Ryan turned slowly toward Emily.

"What?"

Emily said nothing.

And that silence destroyed everything.

Six months earlier.

Before the blood.

Before Alexander returned.

Before the secrets.

Emily Carter stood in a small apartment, staring at a newspaper.

The headline was simple.

BLACKWOOD HEIR RYAN BLACKWOOD TAKES CONTROL OF FAMILY EMPIRE.

Below the headline was a picture of Ryan.

Confident.

Powerful.

Untouchable.

The face of the family that had destroyed hers.

Emily remembered the first time she saw him.

She hated him before she knew him.

Because his last name carried the weight of her father's death.

Blackwood.

The name that took everything.

Her father.

Her childhood.

Her belief in justice.

For ten years, Emily had searched for the truth.

For ten years, she had followed every rumor.

Every document.

Every hidden connection.

Until she discovered something unexpected.

Ryan Blackwood.

The son.

Not the father.

Not the mother.

The son.

The person closest to the empire.

The person who could destroy it.

And that was when she made a decision.

She would enter his world.

She would make him trust her.

And when the time came...

She would take everything from him.

Present day.

Ryan stared at Emily.

"Tell me."

His voice was quiet.

Dangerously quiet.

"Is it true?"

Emily swallowed.

"Ryan—"

"Did you marry me because of my family?"

The question hurt because she couldn't lie.

Not anymore.

"At first."

Those two words shattered something between them.

Ryan looked away.

He laughed softly.

A broken laugh.

"So it was all a plan."

"No."

"You said at first."

Emily stepped closer.

"I married you because I wanted answers."

Ryan looked at her.

"And after you got them?"

Silence.

Emily struggled to speak.

"Something changed."

"What changed?"

"You."

The answer surprised him.

Emily continued.

"I thought you were just like them."

She looked at Victoria.

"I thought you were another Blackwood who cared only about power."

Her eyes returned to Ryan.

"But you weren't."

Ryan's expression didn't change.

"How convenient."

"No."

Her voice became emotional.

"I hated you before I knew you."

A pause.

"But then I saw you."

"You mean you saw someone useful."

"No."

Emily shook her head.

"I saw someone who was also trapped."

Ryan remembered.

Their first meeting.

A charity event.

Emily had spilled wine on his expensive suit.

Everyone around them became terrified.

Everyone except her.

"I'm sorry."

She had said.

Then she looked at him.

"Actually, I'm not."

Ryan had been shocked.

Nobody spoke to him like that.

Nobody challenged him.

Nobody treated him like a normal person.

He remembered smiling.

The first real smile in years.

He didn't know then that she had a reason for approaching him.

He didn't know that she was investigating his family.

He didn't know their entire relationship had started with a lie.

"You should hate me."

Emily's voice brought him back.

Ryan looked at her.

"Maybe I should."

The words hurt.

But she accepted them.

"I understand."

Victoria watched them silently.

Enjoying the pain.

"Beautiful, isn't it?"

Nobody looked at her.

"A marriage between two people who were both pretending."

She smiled.

"One wanted revenge."

She looked at Emily.

"The other wanted an heir."

She looked at Ryan.

"And neither realized they were being played."

Ryan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria's expression changed.

For the first time, she looked serious.

"It means your marriage was never the biggest secret."

Michael stepped forward.

"Victoria."

She ignored him.

"Tell him, Emily."

Emily looked confused.

"Tell him what?"

Victoria smiled.

"Tell him about the agreement."

Ryan looked at Emily.

"What agreement?"

Emily's face went pale.

Because she knew exactly what Victoria meant.

Ten years earlier.

After Alexander disappeared.

After Daniel died.

Emily found one final document.

A document hidden among her father's files.

It was a contract.

Not a legal contract.

A promise.

A promise between two people.

Emily and Alexander.

The agreement said:

If the Blackwood family could not be exposed through evidence, Emily would destroy them from the inside.

And the easiest way inside...

was Ryan Blackwood.

Ryan stared at her.

"You made a deal with Alexander."

Emily couldn't deny it.

"Yes."

His eyes darkened.

"To destroy me."

"No."

"To destroy my family."

"Yes."

The honesty hurt.

More than a lie.

Ryan stepped away.

"So everything."

He looked around the room.

"Our marriage."

"Our relationship."

"Every moment."

"Was part of your revenge."

Emily whispered:

"At the beginning."

Ryan shook his head.

"Stop saying that."

His voice broke slightly.

"Stop trying to make the lie smaller."

Emily looked at him.

"I fell in love with you."

The words came out before she could stop them.

The room went silent.

Ryan stared.

For a moment, the anger disappeared.

Only pain remained.

"You loved me?"

Emily nodded.

"Yes."

"After lying to me?"

"Yes."

"After using me?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

Ryan looked away.

Because the worst part was...

he believed her.

Victoria watched them.

Then she spoke.

"You see, Ryan?"

He looked at her.

"What?"

"You always believed you were different from us."

She smiled.

"But you aren't."

Ryan's expression hardened.

"Don't compare me to you."

"Why?"

She walked closer.

"You built your marriage on a lie."

Ryan said nothing.

"You manipulated people."

Silence.

"You used someone's feelings to get what you wanted."

Ryan looked at Emily.

And hated that his mother had a point.

Victoria whispered:

"Like mother."

A pause.

"Like son."

Suddenly, Michael's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed immediately.

"What happened?"

Everyone watched him.

Then he looked at Emily.

"We have a problem."

"What?"

He slowly lowered the phone.

"The person who sent the photograph..."

Emily froze.

"Who?"

Michael looked at Ryan.

"The person who has been watching us..."

A pause.

"...is Alexander."

Nobody spoke.

Ryan frowned.

"That makes no sense."

Michael's voice was quiet.

"Because Alexander isn't watching us from outside."

He looked toward the hidden room.

"He has been inside the Blackwood mansion this entire time."

A sound came from the hallway.

A slow clap.

Everyone turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

Older.

Scarred.

Familiar.

Alexander Vale.

Alive.

His eyes moved to Emily.

Then Ryan.

Then Victoria.

Finally, he smiled.

"Ten years."

His voice was cold.

"Ten years pretending to be dead."

He stepped into the room.

"And all of you still don't understand."

Ryan stared.

"Understand what?"

Alexander looked at Emily.

"You thought your marriage was built on revenge."

Then he looked at Ryan.

"You thought your family was built on power."

Finally, he looked at Victoria.

"But the truth is..."

His expression darkened.

May you like

"...your entire life was built on a lie."
