Chapter 8: Alexander’s Last Secret

Chapter 8: Alexander’s Last Secret
The name echoed through the underground chamber.
The first Blackwood.
For a moment, Alexander Vale forgot how to breathe.
Because some names were not supposed to be spoken.
Some names belonged only to history books.
Some ghosts were meant to remain buried.
"That's impossible."
Daniel Carter looked at him calmly.
"Ten years ago, you said the same thing about me."
Alexander stared at him.
"You were supposed to be dead."
Daniel gave a tired smile.
"So were you."
The two men stood in silence.
Two survivors.
Two people who had spent a decade hiding from the same enemy.
Finally, Alexander looked away.
"How long have you known?"
"About him?"
Daniel nodded.
"Since before your disappearance."
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Daniel's expression changed.
"Because you would have gone after him."
"Of course I would."
"And you would have died."
The words were simple.
But Alexander knew they were true.
Because he had spent ten years pretending he was patient.
Pretending he was waiting for the right moment.
But the truth was different.
He had been running.
From the Blackwoods.
From the man behind them.
And from his own guilt.
Upstairs, Ryan stood in the empty dining hall.
The table that once represented family now felt like a battlefield.
His mother.
His wife.
His father's secrets.
Alexander's return.
His dead father walking through the mansion.
Nothing made sense anymore.
Emily found him sitting alone.
She hesitated before approaching.
For the first time since their marriage, she didn't know how to stand beside him.
Not because of distance.
Because of everything between them.
"Ryan."
He didn't look up.
"Did you ever love me?"
The question surprised her.
But she knew he deserved an honest answer.
"Yes."
"When?"
Emily sat across from him.
"Not when I first met you."
Ryan nodded.
"I know."
"I hated you."
He looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because your name was connected to everything I lost."
She looked down.
"I thought if I destroyed the Blackwoods, I would finally feel like my father had justice."
"And then?"
"Then I met you."
A small, sad smile appeared on her face.
"You were nothing like the person I imagined."
Ryan remained silent.
"You were lonely."
The words hit him.
"People saw your money. Your power. Your name."
Emily looked into his eyes.
"But nobody saw you."
Ryan looked away.
"And you did?"
"I tried not to."
A tear appeared in her eyes.
"But I did."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Ryan asked:
"Did Alexander know?"
Emily froze.
"Know what?"
"That you loved me."
She looked away.
"Yes."
Ryan's expression changed.
"He knew?"
"He warned me."
"What did he say?"
Emily remembered.
Ten years ago.
The first time Alexander saw Ryan's picture.
He immediately understood.
"Don't."
Emily looked at him.
"Don't what?"
"Don't go near him."
"Why?"
"Because Richard Blackwood's son is not your enemy."
Emily frowned.
"Then what is he?"
Alexander looked at the photograph.
"A boy born into a war he never chose."
Emily didn't understand then.
But now she did.
Present day.
"He told me you were different."
Ryan looked surprised.
"Alexander said that?"
Emily nodded.
"He said the Blackwood blood didn't define you."
A long silence followed.
For the first time, Ryan saw Alexander differently.
Not as the enemy.
Not as the man who disappeared.
But as someone who had protected him.
Meanwhile, inside the underground archive, Alexander opened a hidden drawer.
Daniel watched him.
"You kept it."
Alexander looked at the object inside.
A small black journal.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Alexander touched the cover.
"Because I wasn't ready."
Daniel sighed.
"You never were."
Alexander opened the journal.
The first page contained a single sentence.
"The Blackwood empire was never built by Richard Blackwood."
Ryan's grandfather.
The first modern Blackwood.
The man who turned a small family business into a global empire.
The man everyone believed was a genius.
But the truth was darker.
"He didn't create the empire," Daniel said.
"He stole it."
Alexander nodded.
"And the person he stole it from..."
He turned the page.
"...has spent fifty years trying to take it back."
Daniel looked at Alexander.
"Now you understand why I disappeared."
Alexander closed the journal.
"You didn't disappear."
Daniel looked at him.
"You were protected."
Alexander's face darkened.
"By who?"
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation told Alexander everything.
"Who?"
Daniel whispered:
"Victoria."
Alexander froze.
"No."
"Yes."
"Victoria protected you?"
Daniel nodded.
"She knew the truth before anyone."
Alexander walked away.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It does."
Daniel followed.
"Victoria was never trying to destroy the Blackwoods."
Alexander turned.
"Then what was she doing?"
"Saving them."
The revelation changed everything.
For years, everyone believed Victoria Blackwood was the villain.
The woman who manipulated everyone.
The woman who controlled the family.
The woman who destroyed lives.
But what if she had been fighting something worse?
Something hidden above them all?
Something even the Blackwoods feared?
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A gunshot.
From upstairs.
Alexander and Daniel immediately ran.
Ryan pushed Emily behind him as the sound echoed through the mansion.
Someone had fired inside.
The lights flickered.
Then went out.
"Stay behind me."
Emily grabbed his arm.
"No."
He looked at her.
"I'm not hiding anymore."
Despite everything between them, Ryan almost smiled.
The old Emily was back.
The woman who challenged him.
The woman who never feared him.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
"Still protecting her, Ryan?"
Ryan froze.
He knew that voice.
Everyone did.
Victoria.
But something was wrong.
The voice wasn't coming from where she stood.
A second voice appeared.
"That's always been your weakness."
The lights returned.
Everyone turned.
Victoria stood near the staircase.
But another person stood behind her.
An old man.
White hair.
A black cane.
A face from the oldest Blackwood portraits.
Ryan stared.
"No..."
Emily looked confused.
"Who is he?"
Alexander appeared at the doorway.
And when he saw the man...
all the color disappeared from his face.
"Arthur."
The old man smiled.
"Alexander."
A pause.
"You finally came home."
Ryan looked at the portrait on the wall.
A portrait he had seen every day since childhood.
The founder of the Blackwood empire.
The man whose name was carved into every building.
Arthur Blackwood.
But that was impossible.
Arthur Blackwood died fifty years ago.
Yet he stood before them.
Alive.
The old man smiled at Ryan.
"My grandson."
Ryan couldn't move.
"You're dead."
Arthur laughed.
"So many people in this family have been dead."
He looked at Alexander.
"And yet here we are."
Emily stepped backward.
"How?"
Arthur looked at her.
"Because death is only useful when people believe in it."
Then he turned to Ryan.
"I have waited a long time to meet you."
Ryan's voice was cold.
"Why?"
Arthur smiled.
"Because you are the final piece."
"The final piece of what?"
Arthur looked around the mansion.
"The empire."
A pause.
"And the bloodline."
Alexander stepped forward.
"Stay away from him."
Arthur laughed.
"You still think you're the hero."
"No."
Alexander's voice became dark.
"I know exactly what I am."
Arthur tilted his head.
"Then tell them."
Ryan looked at Alexander.
"Tell us what?"
Alexander closed his eyes.
Because he knew this moment had finally arrived.
The secret he had buried for ten years.
The secret he had promised never to reveal.
The secret that would change Ryan's life forever.
"I wasn't protecting Emily from the Blackwoods."
Silence.
"I was protecting her from me."
Emily froze.
"What?"
Alexander looked at Ryan.
"And I wasn't the victim of the Blackwoods."
A pause.
"I was one of them."
Everyone became still.
Alexander whispered:
"My real name..."
He looked at Arthur.
May you like
"...is Alexander Blackwood."
