Chapter 3: Blood On The Blackwood Name

Chapter 3: Blood On The Blackwood Name

The Blackwood mansion had always been a place where silence carried more power than words.

For generations, the family had built an empire not only through money, but through control.

Control over businesses.

Control over politicians.

Control over the truth.

Every room inside the mansion held a story.

Every painting hid a memory.

Every locked door protected a secret.

But tonight, for the first time, Ryan Blackwood felt like a stranger inside his own home.

He stood in the grand hallway, staring at the enormous portrait hanging above the fireplace.

His father.

Richard Blackwood.

A man everyone admired.

A billionaire who had built one of the largest financial empires in the country.

A man who taught Ryan one lesson above all others:

"The Blackwood name is everything."

Ryan had spent his entire life protecting that name.

Now he wondered how much blood had been spilled to create it.

"You're still looking at him."

Emily's voice came from behind him.

Ryan didn't turn.

"He was my father."

"I know."

"He was the man who raised me."

Emily walked closer.

"And he was also the man who destroyed my family."

The words hurt.

Not because they were cruel.

Because Ryan couldn't prove they were wrong.

He looked at her.

For years, Emily Carter had been the only person in his life who didn't fear him.

She challenged him.

Questioned him.

Refused to be impressed by his wealth.

That was why he married her.

At least, that was what he had told himself.

But now everything felt complicated.

Because their marriage had started with secrets.

And secrets were exactly what had brought them here.

"Do you hate me?" Ryan asked suddenly.

Emily looked surprised.

"What?"

"Because of my family."

She was quiet for a moment.

Then she answered honestly.

"I don't know."

The answer was worse than anger.

Ryan looked away.

Emily continued.

"I don't hate you, Ryan."

A pause.

"But I don't know if I can trust you."

Those words stayed between them.

Because trust was the one thing they had never truly had.

Three hours earlier, Michael had disappeared.

No explanation.

No warning.

Just one message left on Emily's phone:

"The truth is hidden where the Blackwood blood began."

Ryan had spent the last hour searching the mansion archives.

Emily followed him.

Neither admitted they needed the other.

But both knew they did.

They entered the oldest part of the house.

The original Blackwood wing.

The place built by Ryan's great-grandfather almost a century ago.

Dust covered the shelves.

Old family records filled the cabinets.

"This place was sealed," Ryan said.

Emily looked at him.

"How do you know?"

"Because nobody in my family was allowed inside."

"Why?"

Ryan looked around.

"Because my grandfather died here."

Emily stopped.

"How?"

Ryan's expression darkened.

"The official story was a heart attack."

"And the truth?"

Ryan reached for an old wooden cabinet.

"I don't know anymore."

Inside were hundreds of documents.

Property records.

Bank statements.

Letters.

Old photographs.

Emily carefully searched through them.

Then she found something.

A photograph.

Three people stood in front of the mansion.

A young Richard Blackwood.

A young Alexander Vale.

And a man Emily recognized instantly.

Her father.

Daniel Carter.

Her hands began shaking.

"My father knew them."

Ryan stared at the picture.

"I never saw this."

Emily turned the photo over.

There was writing on the back.

A message.

Written by Daniel.

"Richard, you promised this would end. But if anything happens to me, Alexander knows the truth."

Ryan read the words.

His face changed.

Because one thing became clear.

His father knew.

"Why didn't Alexander tell me?"

Emily asked.

Ryan looked at the photograph.

"Maybe because he was protecting you."

"From what?"

Ryan didn't answer.

Because he already knew.

From the Blackwoods.

Meanwhile, across the city, Victoria Blackwood sat inside her private office.

She watched security footage from the mansion.

Ryan.

Emily.

Searching.

Finding things they shouldn't.

She poured herself a glass of wine.

Her assistant stood nearby.

"Should we remove the files?"

Victoria smiled.

"No."

The assistant looked confused.

"But if they find the truth—"

"They won't."

"How can you be sure?"

Victoria looked at the screen.

At Ryan.

Her son.

The child she had raised to become the perfect Blackwood heir.

"Because Ryan has always had one weakness."

"What weakness?"

Victoria smiled.

"His heart."

Back at the mansion, Ryan discovered another hidden compartment.

Inside was a small black box.

He opened it.

There was only one item inside.

A letter.

With his name on it.

Ryan.

His hands froze.

"This is impossible."

Emily stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Ryan didn't answer.

He opened the letter.

The handwriting belonged to his father.

"Ryan,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally escaped.

I spent my entire life building an empire. I told myself I was protecting our family.

I was wrong.

The Blackwood name was supposed to represent power. Instead, it became a weapon.

Your mother knows more than she has ever admitted.

Alexander Vale was not my enemy.

He was the only man who tried to stop me.

And Daniel Carter was not my victim.

He was my last chance to become a better man.

Ryan, if you want to know the truth, find Alexander.

But remember this.

The person closest to you is the person most capable of destroying you.

—Richard Blackwood"

Ryan finished reading.

His hands lowered.

Emily watched him.

"What did it say?"

He didn't respond.

"Ryan."

Slowly, he looked at her.

"My father knew."

"Knew what?"

"That Alexander was innocent."

Emily felt a wave of anger.

"Then why did he let everyone believe Alexander died?"

Ryan looked at the letter again.

"I don't know."

A voice came from the doorway.

"Because he was afraid."

Both of them turned.

Michael stood there.

Emily immediately moved toward him.

"Where were you?"

"Making sure we weren't followed."

Ryan stepped forward.

"You knew my father?"

Michael looked at him.

"Yes."

"Then tell me the truth."

Michael studied him.

"Are you ready?"

Ryan's expression hardened.

"I've been lied to my entire life. I think I deserve the truth."

Michael nodded slowly.

"Then listen carefully."

He walked into the room.

"Your father wasn't the mastermind."

Ryan frowned.

"Then who was?"

Michael looked toward the portrait of the Blackwood family.

"The person who controlled everything from the beginning."

A pause.

"The person who turned father against son."

Emily whispered:

"Victoria."

Michael nodded.

"Your mother."

Ryan's face became emotionless.

"No."

Michael looked at him.

"Ryan."

"No."

His voice became louder.

"You don't understand."

Michael stepped closer.

"I understand perfectly."

"She raised me."

"Yes."

"She protected me."

"Yes."

"She loved me."

Michael was silent.

Then he said:

"Maybe she did."

Ryan froze.

"But love and possession are not the same thing."

The room went quiet.

Michael continued.

"Your mother didn't want a son."

He looked directly at Ryan.

"She wanted an heir."

That night, Ryan entered his mother's office.

Victoria looked up from her desk.

"Ryan."

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"You look troubled."

He placed the letter on her desk.

Her eyes moved to it.

For the first time...

her expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Ryan saw it.

Fear.

"You knew."

Victoria leaned back.

"Knew what?"

"About Alexander."

Silence.

"About my father."

Silence.

"About Daniel Carter."

Victoria stared at him.

Then she smiled.

A cold, almost sad smile.

"My son."

Ryan felt a chill.

"You have no idea what you're asking."

"I want the truth."

"No."

Her voice became sharper.

"You want a version of reality that lets you sleep at night."

Ryan stepped closer.

"Did you kill Daniel Carter?"

The question hung in the air.

Victoria looked at him.

And for a moment...

Ryan saw something he had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Then she whispered:

"Be careful, Ryan."

"Why?"

"Because some truths don't free people."

She stood.

"They destroy them."

Ryan stared at his mother.

The woman who had raised him.

The woman who taught him how to win.

The woman who might have destroyed everyone around him.

Before he left, Victoria spoke one final sentence.

"Ask Alexander what happened the night your father died."

Ryan stopped.

Because those words revealed something.

His mother knew.

She knew Alexander was alive.

And she had known all along.

Outside the mansion, Emily waited beside Michael.

When Ryan walked out, she immediately knew.

Something had changed.

"What happened?"

Ryan looked at her.

His eyes were different.

The arrogance was gone.

The certainty was gone.

Only a broken truth remained.

"My mother knew."

Emily's expression hardened.

"I told you."

Ryan shook his head.

"No."

He looked back at the mansion.

"You don't understand."

A pause.

"She didn't just know Alexander was alive."

Emily waited.

Ryan whispered:

"She knew I would find him."

Michael's face changed.

Because suddenly, they all understood.

This was not an accident.

This was a trap.

Someone wanted Alexander to return.

Someone wanted Ryan and Emily to discover the truth.

Someone had planned every step.

And that meant one terrifying possibility.

Alexander Vale had not returned to expose the Blackwoods.

He had returned...

May you like

because someone inside the Blackwood family wanted revenge.
