Chapter 19: The Last Phone Call

THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Chapter 19: The Last Phone Call

The underground chamber shook.

The sound of collapsing systems echoed through the ancient Blackwood foundation.

The empire was dying.

Not because an enemy destroyed it.

Not because a rival family defeated it.

But because its final heir chose to let it go.

For generations, people had fought for the Blackwood throne.

They betrayed.

They manipulated.

They killed.

All for a chair that was never meant to belong to anyone.

And now Ryan Blackwood had done the one thing no Blackwood had ever dared to do.

He had walked away.

Arthur stood at the entrance.

The same man who had haunted every chapter of Ryan's life.

The man who had controlled his childhood.

The man who turned family into a battlefield.

The man who believed fear was the only form of loyalty.

But Ryan noticed something different.

Arthur looked older.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

For the first time, he looked like a man who had lost.

"You destroyed everything."

Arthur's voice echoed through the chamber.

Ryan looked at the collapsing systems behind him.

"No."

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"I destroyed nothing."

A pause.

"I removed the thing that destroyed us."

Arthur laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

"You think you are different from me?"

Ryan stared.

"You think choosing love makes you better?"

He stepped closer.

"You are still a Blackwood."

A pause.

"You still want control."

Ryan shook his head.

"No."

Arthur smiled.

"Everyone wants power."

"No."

Ryan looked directly at him.

"Everyone wants to stop feeling powerless."

The words hit Arthur.

Because they were true.

Every monster in the Blackwood family had started the same way.

Fear.

Loss.

Pain.

Then they convinced themselves that control would protect them.

And eventually...

control became the thing that destroyed them.

Arthur raised his weapon.

"Enough philosophy."

Everyone moved.

Alexander stepped forward.

Emily grabbed Ryan's arm.

Victoria looked at Arthur.

The man she had feared for decades.

But before anyone could act...

a phone rang.

The sound was strange.

Almost impossible.

In the middle of chaos.

In the middle of a collapsing underground chamber.

A simple phone ringing.

Everyone stopped.

Ryan looked around.

The sound was coming from the old control table.

A black telephone.

An old device.

A phone that should not have worked.

Thomas stared.

"That phone..."

Catherine looked surprised.

"No."

Ryan approached slowly.

"Who is calling?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

Only one person could have access to that line.

Ryan picked up the phone.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a voice.

A voice he had heard only once before.

But never forgotten.

"Ryan."

His heart stopped.

"Father?"

Richard Blackwood.

The man who had died.

The man whose secrets started everything.

The man whose choices shaped Ryan's entire life.

Alive.

Or at least...

his voice.

Everyone watched.

Arthur's expression changed.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Recognition.

Richard spoke.

"I don't have much time."

Ryan closed his eyes.

"Of course."

A bitter smile.

"Even now, you disappear and leave me with questions."

Silence.

Then Richard answered:

"I deserve that."

The entire room listened.

Because even Arthur had stopped moving.

Richard continued.

"Ryan, if you are hearing this, then you made the choice I hoped you would make."

Ryan looked at the destroyed empire.

"What choice?"

"To end it."

Arthur stepped forward.

"Richard."

The voice on the phone paused.

Then:

"Arthur."

The hatred between two brothers filled the room.

Two men who spent their lives fighting over the same legacy.

But now neither had won.

Arthur spoke.

"You planned this?"

Richard answered:

"No."

A pause.

"I prepared a possibility."

Arthur laughed.

"You always believed you were smarter than me."

"No."

Richard's voice became quiet.

"I believed my son was better than both of us."

Ryan looked down.

The words hurt.

Because after everything...

his father had believed in him.

But he had also hidden everything from him.

Both things could be true.

Richard continued.

"There is one final truth you need to know."

Ryan held the phone tighter.

"Another one?"

A faint sadness appeared in Richard's voice.

"I know."

A pause.

"But this one matters."

"The night of the fire..."

Everyone became silent.

Ryan looked at the flames visible above.

Richard continued:

"I did not save you from Arthur."

A pause.

"I saved you from myself."

Ryan froze.

"What?"

Richard continued.

"I was becoming him."

The confession shocked everyone.

"I spent years fighting Arthur."

"But slowly..."

"I started thinking like him."

Richard explained.

After discovering the original legacy, he became obsessed with protecting Ryan.

He began making decisions for everyone.

Manipulating situations.

Hiding truths.

Using people.

Just like Arthur.

The difference between them became smaller every year.

Until Elizabeth confronted him.

She told him:

"You are not protecting your son if you take away his ability to choose."

Ryan closed his eyes.

Because that sentence explained his entire life.

Everyone claimed to protect him.

But nobody trusted him enough to choose.

Richard continued.

"That was why I let you go."

Ryan whispered:

"You let me believe you abandoned me."

"Yes."

A pause.

"And I have regretted it every day."

For the first time, Ryan heard something he never expected.

His father's weakness.

His regret.

His love.

Not as a Blackwood.

As a father.

Arthur suddenly shouted:

"This changes nothing!"

Everyone turned.

Arthur's face was filled with anger.

"Dead men do not get forgiveness."

Richard's voice answered calmly:

"No."

A pause.

"But living men can."

Arthur looked at Ryan.

"Do not listen to him."

Ryan stared.

"Why?"

"Because he failed you."

Arthur stepped closer.

"Everyone failed you."

A pause.

"I am the only one who can give you what you deserve."

Ryan looked at him.

"And what is that?"

Arthur smiled.

"The world."

Ryan looked around.

At the people beside him.

Emily.

Alexander.

Victoria.

Adrian.

Even Catherine.

People who had hurt him.

People who had lied.

But people who had also changed.

Then he looked back at Arthur.

And finally understood.

The world Arthur offered was the same prison everyone before him had lived in.

A beautiful prison.

A powerful prison.

But still a prison.

Ryan lifted the phone again.

"Father."

Richard answered.

"Yes?"

"I forgive you."

Everyone froze.

Ryan continued:

"But I won't repeat you."

A pause.

"I won't repeat any of you."

Then Ryan turned toward the control system.

The final command was waiting.

DELETE BLACKWOOD LEGACY?

Arthur saw it.

"No."

For the first time...

fear entered his voice.

"Ryan."

The name sounded like a warning.

Then a plea.

"You don't understand what you are destroying."

Ryan looked at him.

"I understand perfectly."

He pressed the button.

The system began.

Files disappeared.

Accounts closed.

Companies disconnected.

A century of control vanished.

Arthur screamed.

"You are nothing without the Blackwood name!"

Ryan looked at him.

And smiled.

"That's the point."

The chamber began collapsing.

Everyone moved toward the exit.

But Arthur remained.

Looking at the destroyed empire.

His entire identity disappearing.

Ryan stopped.

For a moment, he saw something.

Not a monster.

A broken old man.

A man who spent his whole life chasing power because he was terrified of being forgotten.

Arthur looked at him.

"Why?"

Ryan turned.

"Why what?"

"Why don't you hate me?"

The question surprised everyone.

Ryan answered honestly.

"Because hate is another chain."

A pause.

"And I spent my whole life trying to be free."

Arthur looked away.

For the first time, he had no argument.

No plan.

No manipulation.

Nothing.

Outside, the group escaped as the underground chamber collapsed.

The Blackwood foundation disappeared beneath the earth.

The final symbol of the empire was gone.

Later, Ryan looked at the phone.

It was silent.

The line had disconnected.

The last phone call was over.

But before the signal disappeared, Richard had left one final message.

A recording.

Ryan played it alone.

His father's voice appeared one last time.

"Ryan."

"If you are hearing this..."

"Then you finally became the man I hoped you would become."

A pause.

"Not a king."

"Not a Blackwood."

"A man."

Ryan closed his eyes.

The journey was over.

Or so he thought.

Because when he returned to the others...

Emily was holding a new document.

Her face was pale.

"Ryan."

He looked at her.

"What happened?"

She handed him the paper.

At the top was a familiar symbol.

The Blackwood symbol.

But beneath it was something new.

A new organization.

A new name.

And a new message.

THE BLACKWOOD LEGACY IS DEAD.

LONG LIVE THE CARTER LEGACY.

Ryan looked at Emily.

"What is this?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

A pause.

"But someone created this after the empire fell."

Everyone looked at the document.

Because they realized something terrifying.

Destroying the Blackwood empire had not ended the game.

It had only changed the players.

Far away, in a hidden room...

a person watched the news.

The headline appeared:

BLACKWOOD EMPIRE COLLAPSES AFTER CENTURY OF POWER.

The person smiled.

Not Arthur.

Not Catherine.

Not Michael.

Someone new.

Someone who had been waiting.

A hand touched an old family photograph.

A photograph of Ryan.

And a voice whispered:

"Finally."

"The king has fallen."

May you like

"Now the real heir can rise."
