Chapter 13: The Final Betrayal

THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Chapter 13: The Final Betrayal

The document trembled in Ryan's hand.

Not because he was afraid.

Because for the first time in his life, he had no idea what move to make next.

The name on the paper stared back at him.

EMILY CARTER.

The woman he loved.

The woman who had entered his life with a hidden mission.

The woman who had become his only source of trust in a world built on deception.

Now the world believed she was the true heir to everything.

The Blackwood empire.

The companies.

The wealth.

The power.

Everything.

Ryan looked at her.

Emily looked back.

And neither of them knew what to say.

"No."

The word came from Victoria.

Everyone turned.

She stepped forward, her face filled with disbelief.

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

"You knew this day would come."

Victoria shook her head.

"Not like this."

Ryan noticed something.

His mother wasn't angry.

She was terrified.

"What does this mean?"

Victoria looked at him.

"It means Arthur has played all of us."

Ryan looked down at the document.

"The transfer is legal."

Michael checked the pages quickly.

His expression became darker with every second.

"He is right."

Everyone looked at him.

"The signatures."

Michael pointed.

"The seals."

"The verification codes."

"Everything is authentic."

Ryan stared.

"So Arthur really gave everything to Emily?"

Alexander stepped closer.

"No."

Ryan looked at him.

"What?"

Alexander studied the document.

"This isn't a gift."

A pause.

"It's a trap."

Emily finally spoke.

"Explain."

Alexander looked at her.

"Arthur never gives anything without a reason."

He pointed at the agreement.

"This document doesn't make you the owner."

Emily frowned.

"Then what does it do?"

"It makes you responsible."

Silence.

"For every company."

"Every debt."

"Every crime connected to the Blackwood name."

Ryan understood immediately.

Arthur wasn't giving Emily power.

He was giving her the blame.

Michael continued reading.

"There's a clause."

Ryan looked at him.

"What clause?"

Michael's face turned pale.

"Succession responsibility."

Emily stepped closer.

"What does that mean?"

Michael looked at her.

"If the Blackwood empire collapses completely..."

A pause.

"The successor becomes legally responsible for all unresolved liabilities."

Ryan whispered:

"He wants the world to think Emily inherited the crimes."

Alexander nodded.

"Exactly."

The woman who spent her life trying to expose corruption would become the person accused of creating it.

Emily laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was cruel.

"Of course."

Ryan looked at her.

"Emily."

She shook her head.

"No."

Her voice was empty.

"I should have expected this."

"What?"

She looked around the room.

"Everyone has used me."

Her eyes moved to Alexander.

"You."

Then Michael.

"You."

Then Victoria.

"You."

Finally Ryan.

His heart sank.

"Emily..."

"You all decided what I needed to know."

A tear appeared.

"You all made choices for me."

Ryan stepped closer.

"I didn't."

She looked at him.

"But you still doubted me."

He had no answer.

Because she was right.

Hours later, the mansion became a war room.

The Blackwoods had always planned.

Always hidden.

Always controlled.

But now they were fighting an enemy who had planned better.

Arthur had disappeared.

The empire was collapsing.

And Emily was becoming the world's target.

Michael projected financial records onto the screen.

"The companies are already freezing accounts."

Ryan looked at him.

"How long?"

"Days."

"Until what?"

"Until everything is seized."

Adrian leaned against the wall.

"Arthur doesn't need the empire anymore."

Everyone looked at him.

"He wants something else."

Ryan frowned.

"What?"

Adrian looked at Emily.

"Control over the legacy."

Emily stood near the window.

Watching the city.

A city that had no idea what was happening behind the Blackwood walls.

She remembered the first time she entered Ryan's world.

She wanted revenge.

She wanted justice.

She wanted to destroy everything.

But now she was standing at the center of the destruction.

And somehow...

she was the one everyone expected to save it.

Ryan approached her.

"Emily."

She didn't turn.

"I know what you're going to say."

"What?"

"That we can fix this."

Ryan stopped.

"Can we?"

She finally looked at him.

"Can we really?"

The question wasn't about the empire.

It was about them.

Ryan had no answer.

Because love was complicated when trust was broken.

Then Adrian entered.

"We found something."

Everyone gathered.

"What?"

Adrian placed an old file on the table.

A Blackwood family record.

But this one was different.

It had Arthur's personal seal.

Ryan opened it.

Inside was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Plans.

At the bottom was a name that made everyone freeze.

Ryan Blackwood.

Emily looked at him.

"What is that?"

Ryan read the document.

His expression changed.

"It's a plan."

"For what?"

He looked at the title.

THE FINAL SUCCESSION PROJECT.

The document revealed Arthur's true plan.

He never wanted Ryan to inherit the empire.

He never wanted Adrian.

He never wanted Emily.

They were all pieces.

The real goal was to create a perfect successor.

Someone who combined:

Blackwood blood.

Carter blood.

Knowledge of the empire.

And emotional attachment to the family.

Someone who could control the world without being controlled by it.

Ryan looked at Emily.

"And who is that?"

Nobody answered.

Because they all knew.

Michael pointed at the last page.

"There is one more condition."

Ryan looked.

"What?"

Michael read slowly.

"The successor must be chosen by the previous heir."

Everyone became silent.

Emily frowned.

"Previous heir?"

Michael looked at Ryan.

"The previous heir is..."

He stopped.

Ryan understood.

"No."

Emily looked confused.

"What?"

Ryan looked at the signature.

The final approval.

The person who authorized the transfer.

His blood froze.

"I didn't sign this."

Michael shook his head.

"No."

He pointed.

"This signature belongs to someone else."

Ryan looked closer.

Then he realized.

The document wasn't signed by him.

It was signed by his father.

Richard Blackwood.

A chill moved through the room.

Richard had been dead.

But the document was created after his death.

Impossible.

Unless...

Someone had planned this years ago.

Someone who knew exactly how events would unfold.

Suddenly, the mansion security system activated.

A voice came through the speakers.

Everyone froze.

Because they knew the voice.

Richard Blackwood.

Ryan's dead father.

"If you are hearing this, then everything has happened exactly as planned."

Ryan moved toward the speaker.

"Father?"

The recording continued.

"Ryan, I know you will hate me for this."

A pause.

"You will believe I manipulated your life."

Ryan closed his eyes.

Because he was right.

"But I had no other choice."

Emily listened carefully.

"The person you trust most will betray you."

Everyone became still.

"And the person you distrust most will save you."

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Then the system restarted.

A second message appeared.

A live video.

The screen showed Richard Blackwood.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Ryan couldn't move.

"No."

Richard looked directly at the camera.

"Ryan."

His voice was real.

"Forgive me."

The entire room froze.

Another impossible return.

Another dead man refusing to stay dead.

Richard continued:

"I know what Arthur did."

"I know what Victoria hid."

"I know what Alexander sacrificed."

"And I know what Emily was forced into."

Emily stepped closer.

"What is happening?"

Richard looked at the camera.

"Arthur wanted the Blackwood empire."

A pause.

"But I wanted something else."

Ryan whispered:

"What?"

Richard's eyes became emotional.

"I wanted my son to be free."

The screen flickered.

Then Richard said the words that changed everything.

"Ryan, listen carefully."

"The person who betrayed you..."

A pause.

"...is not Emily."

Ryan looked at her.

Everyone waited.

Richard continued:

"It is someone who has been beside you since the beginning."

The screen went black.

A message appeared.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

ACCESSING FINAL BETRAYAL FILE.

The file opened.

The name appeared.

Everyone stared.

Because the person revealed on the screen...

was the last person anyone expected.

MICHAEL.

Nobody spoke.

Michael looked at the screen.

Then slowly looked at Ryan.

Ryan's face changed.

"Michael..."

Michael said nothing.

And that silence was the final answer.

Emily stepped backward.

Alexander reached for his weapon.

Adrian whispered:

"I knew it."

Ryan stared at the man who had been his protector.

His advisor.

His friend.

The one person he thought never lied.

"Why?"

Michael finally looked at him.

And for the first time...

Ryan saw the truth.

Michael wasn't surprised.

He wasn't afraid.

He was waiting.

"I'm sorry, Ryan."

A pause.

"But your father was wrong."

Ryan's voice was cold.

"About what?"

Michael looked at Emily.

Then back at him.

"About who deserves to inherit the Blackwood empire."

The lights went out.

And when they returned...

May you like

Michael was gone.
