Chapter 5: The Hidden Room

Chapter 5: The Hidden Room

The photograph lay on the floor.

Emily stared at it as if looking away for even one second would make it disappear.

But it didn't.

The image remained.

A frozen moment from ten years ago.

A moment that should not exist.

Ryan.

Alexander.

Her father.

And the fourth person standing behind them.

The person who was supposed to be dead.

Emily slowly bent down and picked up the photograph.

Her fingers trembled.

"Who is he?"

Ryan had returned from outside.

His face was pale.

"What happened?"

Emily turned the picture toward him.

The moment Ryan saw it, his entire expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Fear.

"You know him."

It wasn't a question.

Ryan stared at the photograph.

His lips parted slightly.

"No."

Emily stepped closer.

"Ryan."

"I said no."

But his voice betrayed him.

He knew.

Michael watched him carefully.

"Who is the man behind you?"

Ryan didn't answer.

The silence itself was an answer.

Emily felt a deep disappointment.

"Another secret."

Ryan looked at her.

"It's not what you think."

"Then explain."

"I can't."

"Why?"

Ryan looked at the photograph again.

"Because I don't remember."

Michael frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Ryan rubbed his forehead.

"There are pieces of that night missing."

Emily froze.

"Missing?"

"I remember driving there. I remember seeing Alexander. I remember arguing with him."

He paused.

"Then nothing."

Michael's expression darkened.

"Someone drugged you."

Ryan looked at him.

"Or erased my memory."

A cold silence filled the room.

Because suddenly they understood.

Someone had been controlling the story from the beginning.

An hour later, Michael led them to the oldest part of the mansion.

The underground level.

A place Ryan had never known existed.

The entrance was hidden behind a massive bookshelf in the original Blackwood library.

Emily stared.

"How did you know about this?"

Michael looked at the hidden door.

"Because Alexander discovered it."

Ryan looked at him.

"How?"

"Your grandfather built it."

The door opened with a quiet click.

A dark staircase appeared.

Cold air flowed upward.

Emily felt uneasy.

"What is down there?"

Michael looked at both of them.

"The truth."

The three walked down the stairs.

The deeper they went, the colder it became.

The walls were made of old stone.

Unlike the elegant rooms above, this place felt forgotten.

Abandoned.

Like someone had tried to erase it.

At the bottom was a long hallway.

Several doors lined both sides.

Ryan touched the wall.

"Why would my family build this?"

Michael answered:

"Every powerful family has a place where they keep what they don't want the world to see."

Emily looked at him.

"And this is the Blackwoods'?"

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

They reached the final door.

It had no handle.

Only a symbol carved into the wood.

The same symbol from the documents.

Emily recognized it.

"The symbol on my father's files."

Michael looked at Ryan.

"Open it."

Ryan frowned.

"Why me?"

"Because it was made for a Blackwood."

Ryan placed his hand against the symbol.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then a small mechanism clicked.

The door slowly opened.

Inside was not a room.

It was an archive.

Thousands of documents filled the shelves.

Photographs.

Recordings.

Contracts.

Personal files.

Evidence.

Emily stepped inside.

"This is impossible."

Michael walked toward the shelves.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"This is what your family has been hiding."

Ryan picked up a file.

The name on it made his heart stop.

ALEXANDER VALE.

He opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Medical reports.

Surveillance images.

Every detail of Alexander's life.

Including the night he disappeared.

Ryan looked at Michael.

"They were watching him."

Michael nodded.

"For years."

Emily found another file.

Her father's name.

DANIEL CARTER.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

Inside was a document dated three days before his death.

A confession.

Her father's handwriting.

"If you are reading this, then I have failed to expose them."

Emily covered her mouth.

Ryan moved beside her.

"Read it."

She continued.

"The Blackwoods are not the only ones involved. There is someone above them. Someone who has been manipulating both sides."

Emily looked confused.

"Above them?"

Michael became serious.

"That doesn't make sense."

Ryan turned.

"What?"

Michael stared at the document.

"Because the Blackwoods were supposed to be the highest power."

Emily continued reading.

"Alexander knows the identity of this person. But he cannot reveal it until the evidence is complete."

Then came the final sentence.

A sentence that made Emily's blood run cold.

"If I die, do not trust the person who claims to love you most."

The room became silent.

Ryan looked away.

Because everyone immediately thought of the same person.

Victoria Blackwood.

Suddenly, an old recording device turned on.

Everyone froze.

A voice filled the room.

Richard Blackwood.

Ryan's father.

"If you found this room, then the worst has happened."

Ryan stepped closer.

"Father?"

The recording continued.

"I spent years trying to escape the machine I created."

A pause.

"The Blackwood empire was never just about money. It was about control."

Emily listened carefully.

"Victoria knows about this room. She knows about the files. But she doesn't know I moved the final evidence."

Ryan's eyes widened.

"Moved?"

The recording continued.

"Ryan, if you are listening to this, I am sorry."

Ryan froze.

His father's voice became softer.

"I failed you."

A tear appeared in Ryan's eyes.

Not because he was weak.

Because those were words he had waited his entire life to hear.

"I wanted to protect you from this family. But instead, I turned you into part of it."

The recording stopped.

Then another voice appeared.

A woman's voice.

Victoria.

Everyone froze.

"Richard, you always were too sentimental."

Ryan stepped backward.

His mother's voice.

From ten years ago.

"Our son will inherit everything. He doesn't need the truth."

A second voice.

Richard.

"He deserves to know what we did."

Victoria:

"No. He deserves to survive."

Then a sound.

A struggle.

A crash.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Ryan whispered:

"She killed him."

Michael looked at him.

"We don't know that."

Ryan turned.

"She was there."

"Yes."

"She threatened him."

"Yes."

"She lied to me."

Michael remained silent.

Ryan laughed bitterly.

"My whole life was built on her lies."

Emily looked at him.

For the first time, she saw not the powerful Ryan Blackwood.

Not the arrogant businessman.

Just a son who discovered his mother might have destroyed his family.

Then the lights went out.

Complete darkness.

Emily grabbed Ryan's arm.

"What happened?"

Michael immediately moved.

"Stay here."

A sound came from outside the room.

Footsteps.

Someone was walking through the archive.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Like they owned the place.

A woman's voice echoed.

"Looking for answers?"

Emily froze.

Ryan's face turned pale.

Because he recognized the voice.

"Mother."

The lights came back on.

Victoria Blackwood stood at the entrance.

Elegant.

Calm.

Untouched.

She looked at the three of them.

Then smiled.

"I was wondering how long it would take you to find this room."

Ryan stared at her.

"Why?"

Victoria tilted her head.

"Why what?"

"Why did you lie to me?"

Her expression softened.

Almost like she was hurt.

"Oh, Ryan."

She walked closer.

"I lied because I loved you."

Emily stepped forward.

"Love doesn't destroy people."

Victoria looked at her.

"No."

She smiled coldly.

"Love makes people weak."

She looked at Ryan.

"And I spent twenty-five years making sure you were never weak."

Ryan stared at his mother.

"Did you kill my father?"

Victoria said nothing.

That silence was louder than any confession.

Then she looked at Emily.

"And you."

Emily felt a chill.

"You should have stayed away from Alexander."

"Why?"

Victoria smiled.

"Because Alexander didn't come back to reveal the truth."

A pause.

"He came back to finish what he started."

Michael's face changed.

"What are you talking about?"

Victoria looked at him.

"You should know better than anyone."

Then she turned to Ryan.

"Ask him."

Ryan frowned.

"Ask him what?"

Victoria smiled.

"Ask Michael who really killed Daniel Carter."

Everyone became still.

Because the truth had just changed direction.

May you like

Again.
