Chapter 15: The Night Everything Burned

THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Chapter 15: The Night Everything Burned

The voice disappeared.

But the silence it left behind was unbearable.

Ryan stood in the center of the archive, unable to move.

The entire world had changed again.

Not because of another betrayal.

Not because of another secret.

But because the one thing he had always believed to be certain...

his own identity...

was no longer his.

He looked at Victoria.

The woman who raised him.

The woman who protected him.

The woman who lied to him.

"She's alive?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

"Yes."

Ryan's voice became colder.

"And you knew."

A pause.

"Yes."

The answer was becoming a pattern.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except him.

"Why?"

The question was simple.

But it carried twenty-five years of pain.

Victoria looked at the floor.

"Because if Arthur knew you were Elizabeth's son, you would never have survived."

Ryan stared.

"Why would he care?"

Alexander answered quietly.

"Because Elizabeth was the only person Arthur ever feared."

Everyone turned.

Ryan frowned.

"My mother?"

Alexander nodded.

"She knew everything."

"About the empire?"

"About the people behind it."

Daniel added:

"Elizabeth discovered the original legacy agreement. She knew Arthur had stolen control."

Ryan looked at the files.

"So he tried to erase her."

Victoria nodded.

"And when he couldn't..."

A pause.

"He erased you."

The truth began to unfold.

Twenty-five years ago, Elizabeth Blackwood discovered Arthur's plan.

He wasn't building an empire.

He was building a machine.

A system where every person depended on him.

Money.

Companies.

Politicians.

Families.

Nothing could exist without his permission.

Elizabeth believed the original founders created power to serve people.

Arthur believed power existed to control them.

The disagreement became a war.

And Ryan was born in the middle of it.

"Your birth was supposed to end Arthur's control."

Daniel looked at Ryan.

"Because you represented both sides."

Ryan frowned.

"The Blackwoods and the Carters?"

Daniel nodded.

"Elizabeth was the last original Blackwood heir."

"Your father, Richard, represented the modern Blackwood line."

"And your connection to Emily..."

Everyone became silent.

Ryan understood.

"The Carter bloodline."

Exactly.

The two families Arthur tried to separate.

Were connected again.

Ryan looked at Emily.

For the first time, he didn't see her as a secret.

He saw someone who had been trapped by the same history.

Someone whose life had been controlled before she was even born.

"I’m sorry."

The words surprised her.

"Ryan..."

"I spent so long thinking you were the person who destroyed my life."

He shook his head.

"But we were both victims."

Emily looked away.

"That doesn't erase what I did."

"No."

Ryan was honest.

"It doesn't."

The pain remained.

The lies remained.

But something had changed.

For the first time, they were fighting the same enemy.

Suddenly, every light in the mansion turned red.

An alarm sounded.

Michael's voice came through the speakers.

Everyone froze.

A recording.

Not live.

Michael appeared on the screen again.

"I knew you would find Elizabeth eventually."

Ryan stared.

"Michael."

The recording continued.

"You always follow the truth."

A smile.

"That is your greatest strength."

A pause.

"And your greatest weakness."

Michael showed a video.

The Blackwood mansion.

From twenty-five years ago.

A young Victoria.

A young Richard.

A baby.

Ryan.

And Elizabeth.

Everyone watched silently.

Then the image changed.

Fire.

The mansion burning.

People running.

Chaos.

Ryan stepped closer.

"What is this?"

Alexander's face changed.

"No."

Daniel whispered:

"The night of the fire."

For years, everyone believed the fire was an accident.

A tragedy.

The night Elizabeth disappeared.

The night Ryan was separated from his real mother.

But the video showed something else.

Someone started the fire.

Someone walked through the burning mansion.

Someone carried baby Ryan away.

And the person doing it...

was Richard Blackwood.

Ryan froze.

"No."

Victoria looked away.

Emily watched him carefully.

The video continued.

Richard carried baby Ryan through the flames.

Then he met someone outside.

Arthur.

The two men spoke.

The audio was damaged.

But one sentence was clear.

Richard said:

"He will never become like you."

Arthur answered:

"He will become exactly what I need."

The screen went black.

Ryan couldn't breathe.

"My father..."

Alexander stepped forward.

"Ryan."

"No."

His voice shook.

"My father took me."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"From my mother."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Nobody answered.

Until Victoria whispered:

"Because Elizabeth asked him to."

Ryan turned.

"What?"

The truth was worse than betrayal.

Elizabeth knew Arthur would kill Ryan if he discovered the child was the true heir.

So she made a desperate decision.

She asked Richard to take Ryan away.

To hide him.

To make the world believe Elizabeth died.

To let Arthur believe he had won.

But Richard made one mistake.

He didn't tell Ryan the truth.

He raised him inside the same empire Elizabeth wanted him to escape.

Ryan walked away.

Every step felt heavier.

His father wasn't a hero.

But he wasn't a villain either.

He was a man trapped between impossible choices.

Just like everyone else.

Then another message appeared.

Michael.

This time, not a recording.

A live connection.

His face appeared on the screen.

"Impressive."

Ryan looked at him.

"Where are you?"

Michael smiled.

"Somewhere you can't reach."

"You planned the fire?"

Michael shook his head.

"No."

Ryan frowned.

"Then what did you do?"

Michael leaned closer.

"I saved Arthur's greatest secret."

A pause.

"And now I'm going to reveal it."

Michael pressed a button.

A document appeared.

A birth certificate.

Ryan's name.

But something was different.

The father's name.

Everyone stared.

Because the name written there was not Richard Blackwood.

It was:

ALEXANDER BLACKWOOD.

The room went completely silent.

Ryan looked at Alexander.

Alexander looked shocked.

"No."

Michael smiled.

"Yes."

Emily whispered:

"Ryan..."

Alexander stepped backward.

"This isn't possible."

Michael laughed.

"You spent your entire life protecting the son you didn't know was yours."

Ryan couldn't speak.

Another truth.

Another impossible secret.

He looked at Alexander.

"The fire."

Alexander said nothing.

"Tell me."

Alexander's eyes filled with pain.

"I didn't know."

Ryan stared.

"What?"

"I knew Elizabeth."

A pause.

"I knew she was planning to escape."

"But I didn't know about you."

Alexander looked broken.

"When Arthur told me she died..."

He swallowed.

"I believed him."

Michael smiled.

"That is the problem with all of you."

"You believe too easily."

Ryan looked at the screen.

"What do you want?"

Michael answered:

"The same thing everyone wants."

"Power?"

"No."

A pause.

"Freedom."

Everyone laughed bitterly.

Michael continued:

"You think Arthur is the enemy."

"He's not."

Ryan frowned.

"Then who?"

Michael looked directly at him.

"The person who has been controlling Arthur."

Silence.

Ryan felt a chill.

"Who?"

Michael smiled.

"You'll meet her soon."

The screen flickered.

A woman's photograph appeared.

An old photograph.

A woman standing beside Arthur.

Beside Elizabeth.

Beside Richard.

A woman who had been hidden from every record.

Michael spoke:

"She was the first person to understand the Blackwood legacy."

A pause.

"She created the game."

The photograph zoomed in.

Everyone recognized the face.

Because they had seen her before.

In the old family portraits.

In the hidden files.

In the documents.

The woman everyone thought was only a servant.

The woman nobody considered important.

Victoria whispered:

"No..."

Ryan looked at her.

"Who is she?"

Victoria's voice trembled.

"Arthur's mother."

The screen went black.

Michael's final words echoed:

"The Blackwood empire did not begin with Arthur."

A pause.

"It began with the woman who taught him everything."

Minutes later, another alarm sounded.

This time, it wasn't electronic.

It was physical.

A smell entered the room.

Smoke.

Everyone turned.

Outside the archive window...

the mansion was burning.

Again.

The same fire.

The same nightmare.

The same history repeating itself.

Alexander ran toward the door.

"Everyone out!"

But Ryan didn't move.

He stared at the flames.

Because he finally understood.

The fire wasn't meant to kill them.

It was meant to erase the truth.

As they escaped the burning mansion, Ryan looked back.

The place where every secret began.

The place where his childhood disappeared.

The place where his family lied.

The Blackwood mansion was burning.

But this time...

the truth was already free.

On the hill overlooking the fire, a woman watched.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

She held an old photograph.

A photograph of a baby.

Ryan.

She smiled.

"Finally."

A man beside her asked:

"Are you sure he is ready?"

She looked at the burning mansion.

"He was ready the moment he was born."

"Then what happens now?"

The woman looked toward the flames.

"Now..."

She smiled.
