Chapter 11: The Price Of Truth

THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Chapter 11: The Price Of Truth

The words from Michael's phone call remained in the air.

"They're inside your marriage."

Ryan stared at Emily.

Not with anger.

Not with hatred.

With uncertainty.

And somehow, that was worse.

Because anger meant he still believed there was something worth fighting for.

Uncertainty meant everything had become a question.

Emily felt it.

The distance.

The doubt.

The invisible wall growing between them.

"Ryan..."

He slowly lowered the phone.

"Did anyone else know about our marriage contract?"

Emily swallowed.

"Only a few people."

"Names."

She hesitated.

That hesitation hurt him.

"Emily."

"Alexander."

A pause.

"Michael."

Ryan nodded.

"Who else?"

She looked away.

"Lawyers."

"Which lawyers?"

"Ryan—"

"Which lawyers?"

His voice wasn't loud.

But it carried pain.

Emily finally answered.

"The Blackwood legal department."

Ryan closed his eyes.

The legal department.

The one place where every private document connected to him existed.

The one place controlled by his family.

But also...

the one place where someone could have accessed his marriage papers.

The mansion felt different that night.

Not because there were more secrets.

They were used to secrets.

It felt different because now everyone was looking at each other as a possible enemy.

Trust had become a luxury nobody could afford.

Alexander stood near the fireplace.

Daniel Carter sat quietly beside him.

Victoria remained by the window.

Michael reviewed the documents.

And Ryan stood in the middle of the room.

A man surrounded by people who knew more about his life than he did.

"I want everyone to answer one question."

Nobody spoke.

Ryan continued.

"Who knew about my marriage contract before the documents were leaked?"

Victoria looked at Emily.

Emily looked at Alexander.

Alexander looked at Michael.

The silence was enough.

Ryan laughed bitterly.

"Interesting."

Emily stepped forward.

"Ryan, listen to me."

"No."

She stopped.

"I listened to everyone for years."

His voice cracked slightly.

"My mother."

"My father."

"Alexander."

"And you."

A pause.

"And every single one of you had a reason to lie."

Emily looked hurt.

"Not anymore."

Ryan looked at her.

"How do I know that?"

The question broke something inside her.

Because she didn't have an answer.

Michael placed several files on the table.

"We need to focus."

Ryan looked at him.

"Focus?"

Michael nodded.

"The person who framed you isn't trying to expose the Blackwoods."

"Then what are they doing?"

"Destroying the last person who can stop them."

Ryan frowned.

"Me?"

Michael shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Emily.

"Both of you."

Emily opened one of the files.

Inside were photographs.

Her.

Ryan.

Their wedding.

Their first public appearance.

Their private meetings.

Emily's face changed.

"Someone has been following us."

Alexander looked through the documents.

"Not following."

He pointed at the dates.

"Recording."

Ryan looked closer.

The photos started before their marriage.

Before they even knew each other.

"Impossible."

Michael nodded.

"They knew you would meet."

Emily looked at him.

"How?"

Nobody answered.

Until Daniel spoke.

"Because your marriage wasn't the beginning."

Everyone turned.

"What do you mean?" Ryan asked.

Daniel looked at Emily.

"Your father knew about Ryan before you did."

Emily froze.

"My father?"

Daniel nodded.

"Daniel Carter discovered the Blackwood heir was not like the rest of them."

Ryan looked confused.

"How?"

"Because Richard told him."

A silence followed.

"My father?"

Daniel nodded.

"Richard Blackwood knew the truth about Arthur. He knew the empire was controlled by someone else. And he knew Ryan was the only person who could break free."

Ryan stared.

"Then why didn't he tell me?"

"Because Arthur was watching."

The truth slowly began to reveal itself.

Years before Emily and Ryan met, Richard Blackwood had been secretly preparing.

He knew his family was trapped.

He knew Arthur was still alive.

He knew the empire was controlled from the shadows.

And he knew his son was the only person who could destroy it.

But Richard had one problem.

Ryan trusted the Blackwood name.

So Richard needed someone who could show him the truth.

Someone outside the family.

Someone who had a reason to hate the Blackwoods.

Someone who would never be controlled by their power.

Emily.

Ryan looked at Emily.

"You weren't sent to destroy me."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"You were sent to wake me up."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't know."

Michael nodded.

"Richard arranged the first meeting."

Everyone froze.

Emily whispered:

"What?"

Michael continued.

"Your father knew."

He looked at her.

"Daniel knew too."

Emily stepped back.

"My father..."

Her voice broke.

"He knew I would marry Ryan?"

"Not exactly."

Michael sighed.

"But he knew you would enter the Blackwood world."

Ryan looked at the documents.

"So our entire relationship..."

Emily whispered:

"...was planned."

The revelation was devastating.

Because it changed everything.

Were their feelings real?

Or were they just another move in a game started years ago?

Ryan looked at Emily.

"Did anyone ever let us choose?"

She didn't answer.

Because she knew.

No.

Nobody had.

Their entire lives had been manipulated.

Suddenly, the mansion lights went out.

Again.

Everyone immediately reacted.

Alexander reached for the weapon hidden under his coat.

Ryan moved toward Emily.

Michael checked the security system.

"Someone breached the network."

Victoria looked alarmed.

Not afraid.

Alarmed.

That was different.

"Who can access this system?"

Michael looked at her.

"Only family members."

Silence.

Ryan looked around.

"Family?"

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone wasn't sneaking.

Someone wanted to be heard.

Then a voice echoed.

"Still gathering secrets?"

Everyone froze.

A man appeared at the entrance.

Not Arthur.

Not Daniel.

Someone younger.

Someone Ryan recognized.

His blood turned cold.

"No..."

Emily looked at him.

"Who is that?"

Ryan couldn't answer.

Because the person standing there was someone he had trusted for years.

Someone who worked beside him.

Someone who knew every detail of the company.

Every account.

Every document.

Every weakness.

The man smiled.

"Hello, Ryan."

Ryan whispered:

"James."

James Walker.

Ryan's closest business partner.

The person who had helped him rebuild Blackwood Financial after his father's death.

The person Ryan considered family.

James looked around the room.

"Quite a reunion."

Ryan stared.

"You did this?"

James smiled.

"Not all of it."

"Then what?"

James walked closer.

"I simply continued what was already started."

Alexander stepped forward.

"Who are you working for?"

James looked at him.

"You really haven't changed."

Alexander's face darkened.

"You know me."

James smiled.

"Of course."

A pause.

"I knew you before you became Alexander Vale."

Ryan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

James looked at him.

"Because I was there the night you disappeared."

Silence.

Emily looked at Alexander.

Michael reached for his weapon.

Ryan stared.

"You?"

James nodded.

"I watched your family destroy itself."

"Why?"

James smiled.

"Because someone had to inherit what was left."

Ryan stepped forward.

"You framed me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

James looked at him.

"Because you were never supposed to become the leader."

Ryan's eyes narrowed.

"Who was?"

James turned.

His eyes landed on Emily.

Everyone froze.

Emily whispered:

"No."

James smiled.

"The person who was supposed to control the Blackwood empire..."

A pause.

"...was you."

Nobody moved.

Ryan looked at Emily.

Emily looked shocked.

"I don't understand."

James laughed softly.

"You really don't know."

He reached into his coat and pulled out an old document.

A document with a familiar symbol.

The same symbol from Daniel's files.

"The Blackwood bloodline had a backup plan."

He placed the document on the table.

"An heir outside the family."

Ryan stared.

"What are you saying?"

James looked at Emily.

"I'm saying..."

He smiled.

"...Emily Carter was never chosen to destroy the Blackwoods."

A pause.

"She was chosen to replace them."

The room went silent.

Emily stepped backward.

"No."

James continued.

"Your father knew."

"Alexander knew."

"Richard knew."

Everyone looked at her.

"Your entire life was preparing you for this."

Emily shook her head.

"I don't want this."

James smiled.

"That's exactly why you were perfect."

Ryan looked at Alexander.

"Is it true?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

And that was the worst answer possible.

Ryan whispered:

"Alexander."

Finally, Alexander spoke.

"Yes."

Emily looked at him.

"You knew?"

Alexander looked away.

"I'm sorry."

Her heart broke.

Because once again...

everyone had known.

Except her.

James turned toward Ryan.

"You wanted the truth."

He smiled.

"Now you have it."

He walked toward the door.

"But remember."

He looked back.

"The truth always has a price."

Ryan watched him leave.

Then looked at Emily.

The woman he loved.

The woman who had lied to him.

The woman who might have been the key to everything.

And for the first time...

Ryan wondered if protecting her meant saving the woman he loved...

May you like

or protecting the person who would eventually destroy him.
