Chapter 17: The Woman Who Survived Death

THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Chapter 17: The Woman Who Survived Death

The world believed Elizabeth Blackwood died twenty-five years ago.

There was a funeral.

There were documents.

There were witnesses.

There was even a grave.

A perfect ending.

But the Blackwood family had always been built on one truth:

Nothing was ever what it seemed.

And now Ryan stood face to face with the woman history had buried.

His mother.

The woman who survived death.

The abandoned railway station was silent after Elizabeth disappeared into the shadows.

Ryan stood alone.

Holding the old Blackwood ring.

A symbol of everything his family had destroyed themselves trying to possess.

Power.

Legacy.

Control.

But Elizabeth had said something that stayed in his mind.

"Power belongs to the person willing to give it away."

For generations, the Blackwoods had misunderstood their inheritance.

They thought the empire was the legacy.

They were wrong.

The legacy was the choice.

When Ryan returned to the safe house, everyone was waiting.

Emily saw his expression immediately.

"You found her."

Ryan nodded.

Victoria stood up.

Her face was full of emotions she couldn't hide.

"Elizabeth..."

She whispered the name like it belonged to a ghost.

Ryan looked at her.

"You knew she was alive."

Victoria didn't answer.

And once again, silence became the answer.

Ryan's patience finally broke.

"Why does everyone know things except me?"

Nobody spoke.

"I spent my entire life living inside a story written by other people."

His voice became stronger.

"My father."

"My mother."

"Arthur."

"Alexander."

"Emily."

"All of you."

He looked around.

"And every time I discover the truth, I find out someone decided I wasn't ready."

Victoria stepped forward.

"You are right."

Everyone looked at her.

She continued:

"We failed you."

The honesty surprised Ryan.

"We thought protecting you meant controlling your life."

A pause.

"But protection without trust becomes another prison."

Emily looked at Ryan.

She knew exactly what Victoria meant.

Because she had done the same thing.

She had hidden the truth because she thought it was necessary.

But every secret had a cost.

Ryan placed the ring on the table.

"She gave me this."

Alexander looked at it.

His expression changed.

"That is not an inheritance ring."

Ryan frowned.

"What?"

Alexander picked it up carefully.

"Traditional Blackwood rings were symbols of ownership."

He turned it over.

"This one is different."

A hidden mark appeared.

A symbol nobody had seen before.

Daniel moved closer.

"It's the original founder's mark."

Ryan looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Alexander answered:

"It means Elizabeth didn't escape with the legacy."

A pause.

"She protected it."

Suddenly, the lights flickered.

Everyone froze.

Not again.

Not another attack.

But this time, the screen turned on by itself.

A message appeared.

INCOMING TRANSMISSION.

Everyone prepared.

Then Elizabeth appeared.

Live.

She was sitting in a small room.

Not a mansion.

Not a secret fortress.

Just a simple room.

Ryan stepped closer.

"Mother."

Elizabeth looked at him.

"I'm sorry I couldn't tell you everything."

Ryan almost laughed.

"Of course."

Her eyes showed pain.

"I deserve that."

Elizabeth continued.

"But you need to understand something."

"What?"

"I didn't disappear because I was afraid."

A pause.

"I disappeared because I was hunting."

Everyone became silent.

"Hunting who?"

Elizabeth looked at the camera.

"The people behind Arthur."

Ryan frowned.

"Arthur was the enemy."

Elizabeth shook her head.

"No."

Everyone froze.

"He was a weapon."

The room became cold.

For years, everyone believed Arthur Blackwood was the source of all evil.

The mastermind.

The monster.

The person pulling every string.

But Elizabeth revealed something worse.

Arthur wasn't the beginning.

He was a product.

A man shaped by something older.

Something deeper.

"When Arthur was young, he wanted to change the world."

Elizabeth's voice softened.

"He believed power could create order."

Ryan listened carefully.

"But someone taught him that control was better than leadership."

"Who?"

Elizabeth looked away.

"The woman who raised him."

Everyone remembered the photograph.

Arthur's mother.

The woman hidden from history.

"Her name was Catherine Blackwood."

Victoria whispered:

"Catherine."

Ryan looked at her.

"You know her?"

Victoria nodded.

"Everyone in the family knew about her."

"Then why was she erased?"

Victoria's face became serious.

"Because she was the most dangerous Blackwood ever born."

Elizabeth continued.

"Catherine created the first version of the empire."

"She believed families were weak."

"Emotions were weaknesses."

"Love was a vulnerability."

"So she built a system where only the strongest survived."

Ryan understood.

"The Blackwood rules."

Elizabeth nodded.

"Every generation inherited her beliefs."

Emily looked at Ryan.

"So Arthur wasn't creating something new."

"No."

Elizabeth answered.

"He was continuing something old."

Then Elizabeth revealed the final part.

Catherine had one obsession.

Creating a perfect heir.

Someone who could combine intelligence, ruthlessness, and loyalty.

Someone who would never choose love over power.

But every generation failed.

Because every Blackwood eventually discovered the same truth.

Power without love was meaningless.

Ryan looked at the ring.

"And me?"

Elizabeth smiled sadly.

"You were the final test."

"For what?"

"To see if a Blackwood could choose differently."

A sound interrupted.

Everyone turned.

Security alert.

Alexander checked the system.

His face changed.

"We have a problem."

Ryan looked at him.

"What?"

Alexander looked at the cameras.

"They found us."

Outside the safe house, vehicles surrounded the property.

Not police.

Not soldiers.

Something else.

A private army.

Victoria recognized the symbol.

Her expression changed.

"No."

Ryan looked.

"What?"

She whispered:

"The Catherine Group."

The name nobody wanted to hear.

The organization that existed before Arthur.

Before the empire.

Before everything.

A group that had operated in the shadows for decades.

Emily looked at Ryan.

"What do they want?"

Before anyone answered, the door opened.

A man walked inside.

No weapons.

No fear.

He looked at Ryan.

"My name is Thomas."

Ryan stared.

"And you work for Catherine?"

Thomas smiled.

"No."

A pause.

"I work for the truth."

Nobody trusted him.

Ryan especially.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Thomas nodded.

"No."

He looked at Elizabeth's message still on the screen.

"Because your mother made the same mistake."

Ryan frowned.

"What mistake?"

Thomas answered:

"Believing she could defeat Catherine alone."

Thomas placed a file on the table.

"The reason Catherine disappeared from history."

Ryan opened it.

Inside were photos.

Documents.

Records.

Then he saw something impossible.

A picture of Catherine.

Standing beside someone.

Someone alive.

Someone familiar.

Ryan's blood turned cold.

Because beside Catherine stood...

Michael.

Emily whispered:

"No."

Alexander stepped forward.

"Impossible."

Thomas looked at them.

"Michael Vale was never trying to inherit the Blackwood empire."

Ryan stared at the photo.

"Then what was he doing?"

Thomas answered:

"He was preparing the return of the person who created it."

The room went silent.

Ryan looked at the screen.

At Elizabeth.

At the file.

At Michael's betrayal.

Everything connected.

The fire.

The documents.

The collapse.

The secrets.

Michael wasn't the final enemy.

He was the messenger.

Thomas looked directly at Ryan.

"The woman who survived death wasn't the only one."

Ryan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas opened another file.

A name appeared.

CATHERINE BLACKWOOD.

Status:

ALIVE.

Nobody spoke.

Because after everything...

after all the impossible returns...

there was still one person left.

The first Blackwood.

The woman who started the game.

Elizabeth's voice came through the speaker.

"Ryan."

He looked at the screen.

Her expression was no longer calm.

It was fear.

Real fear.

"Listen to me."

A pause.

"If Catherine has returned..."

Ryan waited.

Elizabeth whispered:

"...then the Blackwood war was never over."

The screen went black.

Outside, the private army surrounded them.

And somewhere in the darkness...

the woman who taught generations of Blackwoods how to control the world...

opened her eyes.

Catherine Blackwood was back.

And this time...

she wasn't coming for the empire.

She was coming for the only Blackwood who refused to become like her.

May you like

Ryan.
