Chapter 18: The Fall Of A King

THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Chapter 18: The Fall Of A King

For generations, the world feared the Blackwood name.

It represented wealth.

Influence.

Fear.

A family that could destroy companies with a single decision.

A family that could make powerful people disappear.

A family that survived every scandal, every betrayal, every war.

But every empire had one weakness.

Every king had a moment when the crown became too heavy.

And Ryan Blackwood was about to discover that the greatest enemy of a king was not another king.

It was the truth.

The safe house was surrounded.

The Catherine Group stood outside like an army waiting for a command.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood what this meant.

The old war had returned.

But this time, there was no mansion.

No empire.

No army of lawyers.

No billions of dollars.

Only people.

Only choices.

Only the truth.

Thomas stood in the center of the room.

"You need to leave."

Ryan looked at him.

"Where?"

"Somewhere Catherine cannot predict."

Ryan laughed quietly.

"After everything I've learned, I don't think such a place exists."

Thomas looked at him seriously.

"That's because you still think Catherine wants your power."

A pause.

"She doesn't."

Ryan frowned.

"Then what does she want?"

Thomas looked toward the old Blackwood ring.

"You."

Nobody spoke.

Emily stepped closer to Ryan.

"Why him?"

Thomas answered:

"Because Ryan is the first Blackwood in generations who had everything handed to him..."

He looked at Ryan.

"...and still chose to walk away."

That was the thing Catherine feared.

Not Ryan's intelligence.

Not his money.

Not his bloodline.

His choice.

The Blackwood system was built on one belief:

People always choose power when they are given the opportunity.

But Ryan had not.

He had lost everything.

His company.

His reputation.

His family.

His home.

And still, when given the chance to control the empire...

he chose love.

He chose freedom.

He chose humanity.

And that made him impossible to control.

A car arrived outside.

Everyone became alert.

Thomas looked through the window.

"It's time."

Ryan stared.

"Time for what?"

Thomas answered:

"Your coronation."

Ryan frowned.

"I don't want a crown."

Thomas smiled sadly.

"That is exactly why you are the only person who can carry one."

The group left the safe house.

They traveled to an underground location hidden beneath the old city.

A place that existed before the Blackwood mansion.

Before the empire.

Before Arthur.

The original Blackwood foundation.

A massive underground chamber.

At the center stood a single chair.

Not a throne.

A simple wooden chair.

Ryan looked at it.

"That's it?"

Thomas nodded.

"The first Blackwood leader sat there."

Ryan walked closer.

"No gold?"

"No symbols?"

"No power?"

Thomas smiled.

"The original Blackwoods believed a leader should remember they were still human."

Then the doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Catherine Blackwood entered.

Older than everyone expected.

But powerful.

Not because of wealth.

Not because of fear.

Because of presence.

She didn't need an army.

She didn't need weapons.

The room changed when she arrived.

Ryan stared at her.

The woman who started everything.

The woman who shaped Arthur.

The woman who created the system.

Catherine looked at him.

"So."

A small smile.

"The final Blackwood."

Ryan didn't respond.

She walked closer.

"I expected anger."

Ryan said nothing.

"I expected revenge."

Still nothing.

She smiled.

"But you are like Elizabeth."

Ryan's eyes narrowed.

"Don't compare me to her."

Catherine tilted her head.

"Why?"

"Because she was used by the same system she tried to destroy."

Catherine smiled.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"You learned."

Everyone watched carefully.

Because this was not a confrontation.

Not yet.

It was a conversation between two generations.

The creator of the game.

And the person who wanted to end it.

Catherine looked at Emily.

"Ah."

A pause.

"The Carter girl."

Emily stepped forward.

"I am not yours."

Catherine smiled.

"Good."

Everyone was surprised.

Catherine continued:

"The moment someone belongs to another person, they lose themselves."

She looked at Ryan.

"That is why this family failed."

Ryan frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Catherine walked around the chamber.

"Every Blackwood wanted ownership."

"Ownership of companies."

"Ownership of people."

"Ownership of love."

She stopped.

"Even Richard."

Ryan's expression changed.

"My father?"

"Yes."

Catherine looked at him.

"He loved you."

A pause.

"But he also tried to shape you."

Ryan looked away.

Because it was true.

Catherine continued.

"The greatest mistake of the Blackwoods was believing they could create perfection."

She looked at Ryan.

"You were supposed to become the perfect heir."

Ryan smiled bitterly.

"And I failed."

"No."

Catherine shook her head.

"You succeeded."

Ryan looked confused.

"At what?"

"At being imperfect."

A silence.

"That is why you won."

For the first time, Catherine sounded almost human.

Not like a villain.

Not like a monster.

Like someone who had spent a lifetime believing the wrong thing.

Then she revealed the truth about Michael.

Everyone listened.

"Michael Vale was never my servant."

Ryan looked at her.

"He worked for you."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Catherine looked toward Alexander.

"Because your brother understood what you did not."

Alexander's expression hardened.

"And what was that?"

"That the world cannot be changed by kindness alone."

Ryan stepped forward.

"So Michael believed he had to become another Arthur."

Catherine nodded.

"Exactly."

A pause.

"He wanted to control the empire to prevent someone worse from controlling it."

Emily shook her head.

"That doesn't justify what he did."

Catherine looked at her.

"No."

A pause.

"It does not."

Suddenly, alarms echoed.

Thomas checked his device.

His face changed.

"Impossible."

Ryan looked at him.

"What?"

Thomas looked up.

"Michael."

Everyone froze.

"He activated the final protocol."

The underground screens turned on.

Michael appeared.

But he looked different.

Not confident.

Not calm.

Broken.

"I know you're watching."

Ryan stepped closer.

"Michael."

Michael looked at him.

"I'm sorry."

The words surprised everyone.

Ryan said nothing.

Michael continued.

"I thought I could fix this."

A pause.

"I thought if I controlled the empire, I could protect everyone."

Emily whispered:

"You became the thing you hated."

Michael closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Then he revealed the final truth.

Arthur was not the only one who created the succession plan.

Catherine wasn't either.

There was another document.

A final command.

Created by the original founders.

A rule that could destroy the entire Blackwood legacy.

Michael displayed the document.

THE LEGACY MUST END IF POWER CORRUPTS THE HEIR.

Ryan stared.

"What does that mean?"

Michael looked at him.

"It means the Blackwood empire was never meant to survive forever."

Everyone froze.

The entire purpose of the family...

was not to preserve power.

It was to know when to destroy it.

Catherine looked at Ryan.

"That is why you are here."

Ryan understood.

The final choice.

Not becoming king.

Ending the kingdom.

Michael continued:

"Ryan, you have one decision."

A pause.

"Take control of the Blackwood empire."

"Become the most powerful man in the world."

"Or destroy everything your family built."

The room became silent.

Everyone looked at Ryan.

Emily.

Alexander.

Victoria.

Even Catherine.

Because after generations of people fighting for power...

the future depended on the one person who didn't want it.

Ryan looked at the chair.

The original Blackwood seat.

Then at the empire files.

Then at Emily.

He thought about everything.

His father.

His mother.

His childhood.

His pain.

His anger.

His love.

Finally, he spoke.

"I choose..."

Everyone waited.

Ryan walked toward the control system.

"I choose to end it."

The room exploded.

Systems activated.

Accounts locked.

Documents erased.

The Blackwood empire began collapsing from the inside.

Catherine watched silently.

For the first time...

she smiled.

Not because she won.

Because she finally lost.

Ryan turned.

"Why are you smiling?"

Catherine looked at him.

"Because after one hundred years..."

A pause.

"The Blackwoods finally produced someone who understood the legacy."

But then the doors opened.

A figure appeared.

Everyone froze.

Michael's face disappeared from the screen.

The person standing there held a weapon.

Ryan recognized him.

Impossible.

"You."

Emily whispered.

The man smiled.

"I knew you would choose this."

Ryan stared.

"Arthur."

Arthur Blackwood stepped into the chamber.

Alive.

Again.

But this time, he wasn't alone.

Behind him stood an entire army.

Arthur looked at Ryan.

"The empire was never yours."

A pause.

"It was mine."

Ryan looked at the burning files.

At the collapsing system.

At the man who started his nightmare.

And he realized something.

Arthur wasn't angry because Ryan destroyed the empire.

Arthur was afraid.

Because without the empire...

Arthur had nothing left.

Arthur raised his weapon.

"This ends now."

Ryan looked at him calmly.

"No."

A pause.

"This ended the moment I stopped wanting to become you."

The final battle for the Blackwood legacy had begun.

And this time...

the kingdom would not decide the king.

May you like

The king would decide whether the kingdom deserved to exist.
