Chapter 4: The Woman Who Lied For Ten Years

Chapter 4: The Woman Who Lied For Ten Years

For ten years, Emily Carter had carried a secret that was heavier than grief.

Heavier than anger.

Heavier than the pain of losing everyone she loved.

She had convinced herself that silence was protection.

She told herself she was keeping people safe.

She told herself the truth would only create more destruction.

But now, standing inside the Blackwood mansion, surrounded by the very people connected to her father's death, Emily finally realized something.

Silence did not protect anyone.

It only gave the people who caused the pain more time to hide.

Ryan sat alone in the library.

The same room where, only hours ago, he had discovered that his entire family history was built on lies.

The letter from his father remained on the table.

The words burned into his mind.

"The person closest to you is the person most capable of destroying you."

For years, Ryan had believed he understood his family.

His mother was strict but loving.

His father was powerful but honorable.

The Blackwood name represented success.

Now everything looked different.

The mansion no longer felt like a home.

It felt like evidence.

Every wall was hiding a crime.

Every memory had become a question.

The sound of footsteps made him look up.

Emily entered quietly.

She looked exhausted.

But Ryan noticed something else.

Guilt.

A kind of guilt that didn't belong to someone who had just discovered the truth.

It belonged to someone who had been carrying it for a long time.

"How long?"

Ryan's voice was calm.

Too calm.

Emily stopped.

"What?"

"How long have you known about Alexander?"

The question hung between them.

Emily looked away.

And that was enough.

Ryan stood.

"You knew."

"Ryan—"

"You knew he was alive."

She closed her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words hurt more than any confession.

Because they confirmed everything.

Ryan laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because he didn't know what else to do.

"Ten years."

Emily remained silent.

"Ten years, Emily."

His voice became heavier.

"You knew the man my family said was dead was alive, and you never told me."

"I couldn't."

"Couldn't?"

Ryan stepped closer.

"Or wouldn't?"

The pain in his voice made her look at him.

"I wanted to tell you."

"But you didn't."

"No."

"Why?"

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"Because Alexander made me promise."

Ryan froze.

"Promise what?"

"That I would never reveal he survived."

"Why?"

Emily looked at the floor.

"Because if the Blackwoods knew he was alive, they would kill him."

Ryan stared at her.

"And you trusted him more than you trusted me?"

Emily's answer was quiet.

"At that time..."

She paused.

"...I didn't know if I could trust you."

The words hit him.

Because they were honest.

And honesty sometimes hurt more than lies.

Ten years earlier.

Before the Blackwood mansion.

Before the marriage.

Before the secrets.

Emily was twenty-one years old.

A young woman studying law, dreaming of becoming someone who could protect people like her father.

Daniel Carter had been her hero.

He wasn't rich.

He wasn't powerful.

But he believed in justice.

He always told her:

"Money can buy silence, Emily. But it can never buy the truth."

She never forgot those words.

Then one night, everything changed.

Her father died.

The police called it an accident.

A car crash.

A tragic mistake.

But Emily never believed it.

Because three days before his death, Daniel left her a message.

A strange message.

"If anything happens to me, find Alexander Vale."

At the time, she didn't understand.

Until she found him.

Alexander was hiding in an abandoned cabin outside the city.

Broken.

Injured.

A man who had lost everything.

When Emily found him, he almost didn't recognize her.

"You shouldn't be here."

Those were his first words.

Not hello.

Not an explanation.

A warning.

"My father sent me."

Alexander's expression changed.

"Daniel?"

She nodded.

"He's dead."

And for the first time, Emily saw a man who looked truly destroyed.

Because Alexander had not just lost a friend.

He had lost the only person who believed him.

"I knew your father was investigating the Blackwoods."

Alexander's voice shook.

"But I never thought they would go that far."

Emily remembered asking:

"Who killed him?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth was dangerous.

Finally, he said:

"The person who benefits most from his death."

"Who?"

Alexander looked at her.

"Richard Blackwood."

Emily's heart broke.

"But why?"

"Because your father discovered something."

"What?"

"A financial operation hidden behind the Blackwood empire."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

Alexander looked at her sadly.

"You still believe powerful people cannot be monsters."

She remembered those words.

Because they changed her forever.

Present day.

Emily sat across from Ryan.

"I met Alexander ten years ago."

Ryan listened silently.

"I thought he was a criminal at first. I thought he betrayed your family."

"But?"

"But then he showed me the evidence."

Ryan frowned.

"What evidence?"

"Everything."

She looked at him.

"Bank records. Secret accounts. Names. Payments."

Her voice became quieter.

"The Blackwood empire was built through crimes your family buried."

Ryan looked away.

"Why didn't you go to the police?"

Emily laughed sadly.

"I did."

"And?"

"No one listened."

"Why?"

"Because the Blackwoods controlled everything."

The room became silent.

Ryan knew his family had influence.

But he never imagined this.

Emily continued.

"Alexander wanted to expose them."

"Then why didn't he?"

"Because someone betrayed him."

Ryan looked at her.

"Who?"

Emily hesitated.

Then she answered:

"My father."

Ryan frowned.

"What?"

Emily looked surprised.

"No."

She shook her head.

"Not betrayed him."

She corrected herself.

"My father was trying to protect him."

"Then who betrayed him?"

Emily's face changed.

"I never found out."

Suddenly, Michael entered the room.

"Yes, you did."

Both turned.

Emily stood.

"What?"

Michael looked at her.

"You found out."

"No."

"Emily."

His voice was serious.

"You remember the night Alexander disappeared."

Her face went pale.

Ryan noticed.

"What happened that night?"

Emily didn't answer.

Michael looked at her.

"Tell him."

"Michael, don't."

"You can't keep protecting him."

Ryan looked between them.

"Protecting who?"

Emily remained silent.

Then Michael said:

"Ryan."

The name shocked him.

"What?"

"The person who betrayed Alexander..."

He looked directly at Ryan.

"...was you."

The room went completely still.

Ryan stared.

"Me?"

Emily immediately shook her head.

"That's impossible."

Michael continued.

"Ten years ago, Ryan received a message."

Ryan frowned.

"I don't remember."

"Because someone erased it."

"What message?"

Michael answered:

"The location where Alexander was hiding."

Ryan's face changed.

"No."

"You went there."

"No."

"You confronted Alexander."

"I was nineteen."

"You were young."

Michael's voice became softer.

"But you were still a Blackwood."

Ryan stepped back.

"I would never hurt him."

Michael looked at him.

"You didn't."

A pause.

"But someone used you."

Emily whispered:

"Victoria."

Michael nodded.

"Your mother sent you there."

Ryan's breathing stopped.

"Why?"

Michael looked at him.

"Because she wanted Alexander gone."

Ryan left the room.

He couldn't breathe.

His entire childhood.

His memories.

His beliefs.

Everything collapsed.

Outside, he stood beneath the rain.

And for the first time, he remembered something.

A night ten years ago.

A phone call.

His mother saying:

"Ryan, I need you to prove you are a Blackwood."

He remembered driving to the location.

He remembered seeing Alexander.

He remembered Alexander saying:

"Your mother is using you."

And then...

Nothing.

A blank space.

A missing memory.

Someone had taken it from him.

Inside the mansion, Emily looked at Michael.

"Why tell him now?"

Michael watched Ryan through the window.

"Because the truth is already coming."

"What do you mean?"

Michael's expression became serious.

"Someone else knows everything."

"Who?"

Michael didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward the security cameras.

One camera light blinked.

Someone was watching.

Someone had been watching all night.

Then Emily's phone rang.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

Her blood turned cold.

"You should have let the dead stay buried."

Attached was a photograph.

A photograph from ten years ago.

Emily opened it.

And dropped the phone.

Because in the picture...

stood Ryan.

Alexander.

And Daniel Carter.

But behind them was another person.

A person Emily never expected to see.

May you like

A person who was supposed to have died before any of this began.
